NGC 3440 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBb and the constellation Great Bear in the northern sky . It is an estimated 88 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 35,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 3445 , NGC 3458 and PGC 32784 it forms the NGC 3445 group ( LGG 226 ).
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on April 8, 1793 .
