NGC 3454 is a bar-spiral galaxy with extensive star formation areas of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Leo on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 46 million light years from the Milky Way and about 35,000 light years across. Together with NGC 3455 , it forms the galaxy pair Holm 221 or KPG 257 .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 3443 , NGC 3457 , NGC 3461 , IC 656 .
The object was discovered by John Herschel on March 17, 1831 .
