NGC 3473 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBb with an active galaxy core in the constellation Leo on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 406 million light years from the Milky Way and about 135,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 3474 and PGC 213765 , it forms a gravitationally bound galaxy trio .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 3454 , NGC 3455 , NGC 3487 , IC 656 .
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on March 21, 1784 .
