Niger is a federal state of the West African country Nigeria with the capital Minna , which is also the largest city in the state with 291,930 inhabitants (2005).

geography

The state is located in the west of the country and is bordered to the north by the states of Kebbi and Zamfara , to the south by the states of Kwara and Kogi , to the west by Benin , to the northeast by the state of Kaduna and to the southeast by the Federal Capital Territory . Large parts of the Foge Islands and Lower Kaduna-Middle Niger Floodplain protected areas are located in the state; they are wetlands of international importance that were included in the list of the Ramsar Convention .

population

At the 1991 census, the state of Niger still had 2,482,367 people. According to the 2005 census, the state now has 4,082,558 residents. This puts Niger State in 18th place among the federal states. For 2016, a population of 5,556,200 people is assumed.

The population of the state of Niger adheres roughly equally to Islam and Christianity . Nevertheless, under the administration of Mu'azu Aliyu Babangida on January 13, 2000, the Islamic Sharia law was introduced as the basic source of state legislation, which applies to areas with a majority Muslim population in the state.

history

The state was formed on February 3, 1976 from part of the former state "North-Western". The first governor was Murtala Myako between April 1, 1976 and 1977 . The current governor has been Abdulkadir Kure since May 29, 1999 .

The state is divided into 25 Local Government Areas . These are: Agaie, Agawara, Bida, Borgu, Bosso, Chanchaga, Edati, Gbako, Gurara, Katcha, Kontagora, Lapai, Lavun, Magama, Mariga, Mashegu, Mokwa, Moya, Paikoro, Rafi, Rijau, Shiroro, Suleja, Tafa and wushishi.

The gross domestic product of the state of Niger in 2007 was 6 billion US dollars. The GDP per capita was $ 1,480 per inhabitant.

The agriculture is the main industry in Niger. Eighty percent of the state's labor force is employed in it. The climatic and ecological conditions allow the cultivation of grain , yams , beans , cassava , rice , millet , peanuts , corn and sugar cane .

On mineral resources include gold , marble , limestone , chalk , and copper present.
