The Norbertusgymnasium in Magdeburg is a state-recognized high school sponsored by the Edith Stein School Foundation of the Diocese of Magdeburg .

The grammar school was re-established in 1991 by Bishop Leo Nowak at the request of parents as the Norbertus grammar school . The school sees itself as an alternative to the state school system. School practice is based on Christian values and the Christian image of man. In addition to its Christian character, the school has a linguistic, musical and artistic profile.

building

In the old building of the school building, a polytechnic high school was housed from 1949 to 1987, then the traffic school for the Magdeburg area. The old school building is a listed building.

The double school building with three floors and a hipped roof was designed and built by the local building officials Otto Peters and Wilhelm Berner. On the symmetrically designed facade facing the street, dominated by bright plastered surfaces and red bricks, there are neo-Gothic elements. The risalits to the entrance correspond to the staircase risers on the courtyard side. In the course of the separation of the sexes, the respective school building halves with four classrooms each were built without a central corridor connecting them. After considerable damage to the building in the Second World War , it was first rebuilt and, from 1991, modern extensions were added, which were ready for occupancy in 1995.

history

The school was founded in 1898. A boys 'and girls' school was established (Neustädter 2nd Volksknabenschule and Neustädter 2nd Volksmädchenschule), which were separated from each other by different stairs. After the Second World War , in 1949 the facility was converted into a polytechnic high school with the name Wilhelm-Wander-Polytechnische Oberschule . After the turnaround and the renovation of the old building by the Magdeburg diocese, it was re-established in 1991 as the Norbertusgymnasium. In 1995 a new building suitable for the handicapped was completed. After the Edith Stein School Foundation was founded in 2003, the Norbertusgymnasium became its sponsor.

School life and subject teaching

The Norbertusgymnasium Magdeburg is divided into

  • Lower level (grades 5-6)
  • Intermediate (grades 7–9) and the
  • Upper School (Grades 10-12)

From grades 5 to 10, the Norbertusgymnasium Magdeburg is a four-class high school.

Christian profile

The Norbertusgymnasium sees itself in the tradition of the Catholic Church and would like to convey the Christian view of people and the world to its students. From the 5th grade onwards, religious education or ethics are taught. Two classes are divided into a Catholic religious education course, a Protestant religious education course and an ethics course. Baptized children attend religious education according to their denomination, but unbaptized children can also take part in religious education if they so wish. The school is open to people with and without religious affiliation and does not impose anything on anyone, but it is still expected that one confesses to the Christian image of man and its values. Since the school is a church-run grammar school, there are many opportunities to come into contact with Christianity. In addition to projects in the context of religion and ethics lessons, “dialogue lessons” also take place in the 8th and 9th grades, where the individual courses are mixed for a long time and deal with topics such as “growing up” or “dealing with death” . For some years now there has also been the possibility of the “celebration of the turning point in life” which is offered as an alternative for non-denominational young people to the youth consecration, which is still common in the new federal states .

School services take place regularly either in the Nicolaikirche or in the Church of St. Agnes . Participation is voluntary and something special in the Magdeburg area. Solemn church services are also held at festivals and anniversaries, and the Norbertusgymnsium is closely linked to Magdeburg community life. Sometimes pilgrimages or pilgrimages also take place. There is also the possibility of meditation, which takes place in the meditation room during the break in the courtyard.

Musical-artistic profile

In addition to 3 regular classes (A, B, C), the D-class is always run as a so-called "wind class". The decision as to who will be in the wind class is made by the parents and the child when they register. The wind classes differ in the lower grades (5th - 7th grade) from their 3 parallel classes in that the students receive musical training in addition to the normal curriculum. Everyone learns a wind instrument, and instrumental and orchestral lessons are given in cooperation with external music teachers. The 2 weekly music lessons provided for in the Saxon-Anhalt curriculum are replaced by additional music training (4 weekly lessons). Compared to their parallel classes, the wind classes have more lessons per week, but often a more intensive class community. In addition to making music and practicing together, the wind classes also perform at school events (concerts, church services, court festivals, anniversaries ...) and at concerts in and around Magdeburg. There are also annual trips with the other wind classes and the orchestra. With the transition to the 8th grade, the wind class moves into a regular class. However, there is the possibility of continuing to be musically active in the orchestra, chamber orchestra or school choirs.

Art lessons shape the school: In addition to regular exhibitions of works in the corridors, there is also a large art exhibition by schoolchildren every year in January, where the best works are awarded for the individual year groups. In addition, art students regularly take part in art competitions and there are excursions to exhibitions on the Magdeburg art scene ( Kloster Unser Lieben Frauen , aerosol arena , Forum Gestaltung e.V., studios and galleries in Buckau ...).
