The world record holder Hans-Heinrich Sievert was even more unlucky than at the 1932 Games . Four years ago he was not in top form due to an injury, this year he was unable to compete because of another injury. So the Americans were unrivaled. The American champion Bob Clark was now the top favorite. After the first day, Clark led the rankings as expected. His compatriot Glenn Morris, who only completed his third decathlon , was only two points behind. But after the hurdles sprint , hurdles specialist Morris took the lead and expanded it to almost 300 points by the end. His performance on the second day was excellent and Morris became Olympic champion with a new world record number of points . Well behind were his compatriots Bob Clark and Jack Parker. The German Erwin Huber increased his best performance significantly and achieved an excellent fourth place. Morris never competed in a decathlon again after that.

The new evaluation table from 1934 was used to determine the points.

For a better classification of the performance, the points converted according to the current rating system from 1985 are also given. According to this table, which is valid today, the order in places five and six would have been different. But these comparisons are only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis. This is most noticeable in the pole vault , where people jumped with completely different poles than they do today.
