The Triathlon of men in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing was held on 19 August 2008 at the Ming Tombs Reservoir in the Ming Tombs instead.

The race started with a 1.5 km swim in the reservoir, which had a water temperature of 27.2 ° C. After swimming, I switched to cycling on the south-eastern shore of the lake, which had to cover 40 kilometers. At the end, the athletes had to go through a 2.5 long circuit four times.

Race course

The start took place at 10 a.m. local time. At this time, the outside temperature was almost 30 ° C and the humidity was already 82 percent. After swimming, New Zealander Shane Reed was the first to switch to the racing bike. After about half an hour, Alistair Brownlee from Great Britain was able to break away from the competition, but had to hand over the lead to the Canadian Collien Jenkins a little later . Halfway through the race, Belgian Peter Croes had taken the lead. Jan Frodeno from Germany, who was 25th at the time, was only eight seconds behind. Only in the last few kilometers before the last change was a trio able to break away. After first the Luxemburgish Dirk Bockel and then the Belgian Axel Zeebroek had changed, Frodeno reached the transition area in fourth. Towards the end of the second of four laps, a leading group of six athletes was formed, including Frodeno. On the last lap, New Zealander Bevan Docherty , Javier Gómez from Spain and Jan Frodeno were able to break away from the group of six and it seemed as if these three would make up the medal ranks among themselves. However, the Canadian Simon Whitfield fought his way up to the group again and started the final sprint in the last meters, only Frodeno could keep up with Whitfield and won against the Canadian in the final sprint for the gold medal. Docherty secured bronze, while Gómez missed a medal with fourth place.
