The Eastern Styria is a planning region according to the Styrian State Development Program in 2009 and covers the political districts :

The two districts are to the east of the central Mur towards the Burgenland border in the area of ​​the historical East Central Styria , from which the name East Styria is derived. Statistically, the planning region falls into the NUTS region Oststeiermark  AT225, which also includes the planning region Southeast Styria .
