Paul O'Donovan (* 19th April 1994 in Skibbereen ) is an Irish lightweight - rowers .

O'Donovan competed in the lightweight one at the Junior World Championships in 2011 and reached fourth place, the following year he finished 13th. He won the bronze medal at the U23 World Championships in 2013 and came fourth in 2014. He was also fourth at the 2014 World Championships in the adult class.

In 2015 he formed a lightweight double scull with his older brother Gary O'Donovan . At the European Championships the two crossed the finish line in fifth place, at the World Championships they qualified for the 2016 Olympic Games with eleventh place. In May of the 2016 Olympic year, the two brothers won the title at the European Championships in Brandenburg an der Havel . In August 2016, the French Jérémie Azou and Pierre Houin won the 2016 Olympic Games , half a second behind the two Irish won the silver medal. It was the first ever Olympic medal for rowers from the Republic of Ireland. Paul O'Donovan started shortly after the Olympic Games in the world championships of the non-Olympic boat classes , where he won the gold medal in the lightweight singles. At the European Championships in 2017 , the French Azou and Houin again won ahead of the two Irish. At the 2017 World Championships in Florida, O'Donovan defended his world title in the lightweight single from the previous year. In 2018 the Norwegians Kristoffer Brun and Are Strandli won the European Championships ahead of the O'Donovans. At the 2018 World Championships, however, the Irish won by one and a half seconds over the Italians Stefano Oppo and Pietro Ruta . A year later, Paul O'Donovan competed at the 2019 World Championships in Linz together with Fintan McCarthy and won ahead of Oppo and Ruta.
