The 1988 season of the Primera División was the 85th season (the 57th of the professional era) of the Uruguayan top division in men's football , the Primera División .
The Primera División consisted in the championship season of 1988 from 13 clubs, whose teams met twice in a total of 156 championship games played from mid-June to the second half of December of that year. There were 362 goals. Danubio FC won the championship as first in the table in front of Club Atlético Peñarol and last year's champions Club Atlético Defensor as second and third in the season's final table . Miramar Misiones and was relegated to the Segunda División . Peñarol, Danubio and Nacional qualified for the 1989 Copa Libertadores .
The top scorer was Rubén Da Silva from champion Danubio with 23 goals .
