In 1967, Raimund Thomas exhibited alongside Rudolf Zwirner , Alfred Schemela, Michael Werner and other gallery owners at the first Cologne art market , one of Europe's oldest art fairs for modern art and a forerunner of Art Cologne . In 1986, together with four other art dealers, he founded the Berlin auction house Villa Grisebach Auctions. In 1987, Raimund Thomas opened the “A 11 Art Forum”, a private art hall in Munich, in which he presented his personal exhibition perspective to the public. Until 1990 it reproduced a cross-section of the art of the 1980s . Works from the " documenta 8. ", The Venice Biennale , as well as works by Joseph Beuys and young contemporary art, as well as classics such as the entire lithographic work of Pablo Picasso were exhibited .

In 2009 Raimund Thomas and Silke Thomas opened a second location in Munich at Türkenstrasse 16: the Thomas Modern gallery. In 2015 the location on Maximilianstrasse was given up and merged with the location on Türkenstrasse.

Gallery Thomas

Since its inception in 1964, Galerie Thomas has presented pioneering exhibitions of works from German Expressionism and Classical Modernism that the German public had not seen for a long time during and after the Nazi era. Blue Rider artists such as Wassily Kandinsky , Alexej Jawlensky , Gabriele Münter , Franz Marc , August Macke , as well as German Expressionist artists such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner , Otto Mueller , Emil Nolde , Max Pechstein , Karl Schmidt-Rottluff , Erich Heckel , Christian Rohlfs and artists who worked at the Bauhaus , such as Paul Klee or Oskar Schlemmer, have since been inextricably linked to the gallery's program.

In 1978 the gallery presented an exhibition with a hundred works by Alexej von Jawlensky that had never been shown before . Another milestone in the gallery's history was the acquisition of important expressionist works from the legendary "Rheingarten Collection". With exhibition events such as the cycle " Die Blaue Vier ", which Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Alexej Jawlensky and Lyonel Feininger presented one after the other, Raimund Thomas continued the tradition of his well-known predecessors Günter Franke and Otto Stangl. Solo exhibitions by Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst and Joan Miró consolidated the gallery's reputation in the field of German Expressionism and Classical Modernism.

A second focus in the gallery were exhibitions of the international avant-garde, including artists such as Yves Klein , Tom Wesselmann , Cy Twombly , Eduardo Chillida , Gerhard Richter , Joseph Beuys , Horst Antes and Gotthard Graubner .

In the eighties, Galerie Thomas increasingly promoted young art, including the Neue Wilden , who with their expressive painting style followed the bridge 's painters and were shown together with them in numerous exhibitions.

In 1984 Raimund Thomas invited the main actors of the New York graffiti scene to Munich. There was a public spray action in front of his gallery, in the immediate vicinity of the finest shops.

Thomas Modern Gallery

In 2009, Galerie Thomas opened a second gallery in the Kunstareal München , a museum district in Maxvorstadt Munich, at Türkenstrasse 16: Galerie Thomas Modern. An exhibition house for art after 1945 was built on 500 m² . Representatives of German post-war art such as Joseph Beuys and Anselm Kiefer , as well as their contemporaries in the USA, Andy Warhol , Tom Wesselmann , Jim Dine , Joan Mitchell , George Segal and Sam Francis, were shown . Internationally established artists of the younger generation, such as Chuck Close , received attention there, Marc Quinn and Peter Halley . Between 2011 and 2015 there was a project space for young art.

Both galleries have been under one roof since 2015 - at Türkenstrasse 16, directly opposite the Pinakothek der Moderne.
