Busta Rhymes (born May 20, 1972 in New York City ; real name Trevor Tahiem Smith Junior ) is an American rapper and actor .

Leaders of the New School

Busta Rhymes started his career in 1990 as part of the Leaders of the New School (MC Charlie Brown, MC Dinco D, MC Bastard Rhymes and Cut Monitor Milo) with the debut album A Future Without a Past . He called himself "Bastard Rhymes" at the beginning of his career. As to the origin of the name Busta Rhymes, there is, on the one hand, the assumption that it should have got its name from Chuck D , a member of the group Public Enemy , in whose sphere the Leaders of the New School were. Through Public Enemy they also got in touch with the native tongue group A Tribe Called Quest , which recorded the title Scenario with them in 1991 . On the other hand, the name can also be understood as a play on words: “to bust a rhyme” basically means to deliver a good hip-hop rhyme. 1993 saw the release of the second and final album by the Leaders of the New School (SWAG) called TIME

Solo career

Busta's solo career began with features like the 7 MCees remix of A Tribe Called Quests Scenario or Craig Macks Flava in Ya Ear . Since his debut album The Coming ( Elektra Records ) from 1996, he has achieved a high level of awareness in the hip-hop scene as an independent artist . It was a remarkable, but still small success, only the single Woo-Hah !! Got You All in Check was a top 10 hit in the US and UK.

The following album When Disaster Strikes… was less successful in the USA, but was able to assert itself in Europe and made Busta Rhymes known there with the singles Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See , Dangerous and Turn It Up . Soon after, he released the album The Imperial as part of the Flipmode Squad . The group also included the musicians Rampage , Lord Have Mercy , Spliff Star , Rah Digga and Baby Sham .

The next album Extinction Level Event: The Final World Front , the title of which was inspired by the film Deep Impact , contained the single Gimme Some More , which reached number 5 in the UK charts in January 1999. With Janet Jackson he also sang the hit What's It Gonna Be ?!

In 2000 he released his last album with the record company Elektra Records called Anarchy . He then moved to J Records , a new company owned by former Arista Records founder and board member Clive Davis . In 2001 he released the record Genesis with the hits Break Ya Neck , As I Come Back and Pass the Courvoisier , which were published by Dr. Dre and The Neptunes were produced.

On November 26, 2002, Busta Rhymes released his sixth studio album, It Ain't Safe No More . The singles Make It Clap (with Sean Paul ) and I Know What You Want (with Mariah Carey ) became very successful, both in the US and in Europe. In Germany he was already involved in two number 1 hits. On the one hand in 2003 with Never Leave You (Uh Oooh) by Lumidee (together with Fabolous ) and on the other hand in 2005 with Don't Cha by the Pussycat Dolls .

In 2005 he signed a contract with Dr. Dres Aftermath Entertainment , where his album The Big Bang was released on June 13, 2006. The first two singles released were Touch It and I Love My Bitch (featuring Will.i.am & Kelis ). Producers include Dr. Dre, Hi-Tek , Just Blaze , DJ Green Lantern , Swizz Beatz , Eminem and Timbaland .

On May 15, 2009 his eighth studio album was released in Germany under the name Back on My BS on the Universal Motown label. The first official single, Arab Money - the promo single We Made It , which was recorded with Linkin Park , did not appear on the album.

Film career

He made his first appearance as an actor in 1993 in the film Who's the Man . From then on, he kept playing small roles in films like Higher Learning - The Rebels , Forrester - Found! or series like Cosby . In 2000 he played in the new edition of the classic Shaft . He had a leading role in the film Halloween: Resurrection .

In 2015 he had an episode role in the Netflix series Master of None .

Death of his bodyguard

On the night of February 4th to 5th, 2006, the video shoot for the single Touch It with Mary J. Blige , Missy Elliott , DMX , Papoose , Sean Paul , Lloyd Banks and some other members of the G Unit in a warehouse in Brooklyn Shots fired. The 29-year-old bodyguard of Busta, Israel "Izzy" Ramirez, was fatally shot in the chest . At the beginning of the Touch-It video, Busta Rhymes honors it with a few personal words. The sequence of events is not known. According to some media reports, a dispute arose shortly before in the studio within or with the G-Unit crew and Swizz Beatz , but this was ended by Busta Rhymes. Likewise, it is still unclear whether the attack was against Busta Rhymes or whether the bodyguard himself was the target of the attack. The latter had the jewelry from Busta Rhymes in custody at the time of death . Busta Rhymes refused to speak to the New York police about the incident, so he was heavily criticized by the police and the family of the murdered bodyguard.

In March 2007, while a film was being made in New York, he was visited by police, who ordered him to leave for his own safety.
