The river cruise ships of the Rodina class , which was also known as Projekt 588 or BiFa Type A (German: inland passenger ship), are medium-sized, river and canal motorized inland motor ships. The first series was often referred to by the shipyard as type V. Chkalov (German W. Tschkalow ), another shipyard name for these ships was (inland passenger ship type A). The Soviet and now Russian crews simply call the class of ship немцы - the Germans.

details

The VEB Mathias-Thesen-Werft in Wismar built in the years 1953 to 1961 49 units of the class of ships for the Soviet Union . The first ship of this class, V. Chkalov , named after the pilot Valeri Pavlovich Tschkalow , was delivered on December 26, 1953. By 1961 another 48 units had been completed and handed over. There are two versions of the Project 588 class, called I. (11 ships) and II. Series (38 ships), which differ in the number of passengers, maximum load and internal equipment. In the Soviet Union, they were used as inland passenger and tourist ships on the Volga , Kama , Don , Neva and Yenisei . For their time, they were comfortable and reliable ships with a fine streamlined shape. There was no fixed system for naming them; the majority of the ships were named after Soviet or Russian celebrities or fairy tale characters, e.g. B. Ilja Muromez , cosmonaut Ju. Gagarin , I. S. Turgenew , Ivan Sussanin , Aleksandr Nevskiy (Alexander Newski), others have geographical names such as Ural or Elbrus . The German origin is reflected in the names of some ships such as Karl Marks (Karl Marx), Friedrich Engels , Karl Liebknecht , Rosa Luxemburg and Ernst Thälmann .

technical description

The ships with five decks are powered by three diesel engines of the type R6DV48 from the engine manufacturer VEB Schwermaschinenbau "Karl Liebknecht" (SKL), which act directly on the three screws. Many Project 588- class units are still in service to this day, some of them have been decommissioned and only seven ships have so far been decommissioned. One ship sank, three burned down and another three were decommissioned and scrapped. As a result of the discontinued demand for inland passenger traffic (rail, air and bus traffic became more convenient, faster and cheaper), they are now only used by various shipping companies as tourist ships. In order to improve the comfort of the tourists, many ships were renovated by renovating the cabins and the other passenger compartments as well as replacing the various ship equipment according to today's standards, e.g. B. modernized drive, safety and navigation systems.
