Rodrigues Alves , officially Município de Rodrigues Alves , is a small town in the Brazilian state of Acre . It is 626 km away from the state capital of Rio Branco . The population was estimated at 18,930 inhabitants in 2019, who are called Rodriguesalvensians.
Toponymy
The name of the place is the fifth President of the Republic of Brazil Francisco de Paula Rodrigues Alves .
geography
Rodrigues Alves is located on the left bank of the Rio Juruá . The terrain is hilly and lies at an altitude of about 200 meters. With Cruzeiro do Sul and Mâncio Lima , it forms a city triangle. The landscape and climate are those of the Amazon rainforest . The area is crossed by "Igarapés", including the Igarapé 13 de maio , which are smaller rivers and canals in the jungle. In the south, the municipality borders on Peru , with which it forms a green border .
The municipality shares with the cities of Cruzeiro do Sul, Mâncio Lima, Marechal Thaumaturgo and Porto Walter the 8466.33 km² Serra do Divisor National Park, founded in 1989 , of which 13.45% falls on Rodrigues Alves.
history
The territory of Rodrigues Alves is traditional indigenous settlement area of Nawas (Náuas) around the Seringal Buritizal . At the end of the 19th century rubber tappers (seringueiros) settled there to collect rubber, the main product of the region. At the beginning of the 20th century the rubber storage camp Seringal Florianópolis was known there, from which the Colônia Rodrigues Alves became and in 1940 comprised around 25 families who lived from rubber collecting, agriculture and subsistence farming . Politically, the territory of Cruzeiro do Sul and Mâncio Lima was subordinate. In 1960 the Petrobrás company carried out oil test drillings. In 1991 there was a referendum on the future status and after elections to the mayor's office and city councilors, the village was spun off on April 28, 1992 and raised to a self-governing Munizip as Município de Rodrigues Alves . Deviating from April 28, the city festival is celebrated on July 28 with traditional parades.

City prefect (mayor) is Sebastião Souza Correia of the Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (PMDB) with 5007 votes after the local elections in 2016 .

According to the 2010 IBGE census, the population was 14,389. The number was estimated by the IBGE as of July 1, 2019 at 18,930 residents.
In 2010 it was distributed among 4,315 people (29.99%) in the populated area and to 10,074 people (70.01%) in the extensive rural and forest areas.

Infrastructure
The diagonal federal highway BR-364 connects west with Peru, east with the capital Rio Branco, 626 km away. The BR-364 crosses the Rio Juruá, but vehicles have to be crossed by ferry due to the lack of a bridge. The closest international airport, Aeroporto Internacional de Cruzeiro do Sul, is located in nearby Cruzeiro do Sul . Most of the remaining parts of the municipality can be reached by boat along the water.

Rodrigues Alves had an illiteracy rate of 61.5% in 1991 , which had already fallen to 41.1% in the 2010 census.
