Background and story

View of the town of Eisenerz with the Erzberg in the background

Eisenerz lies in the midst of the towering cliffs of the Eisenerzer Alps in the southwest and the Hochschwab in the northeast. The surrounding mighty rock formations dominate the cityscape. Then there are the reddish stages of the Erzberg , the largest iron ore - open pit of Central Europe. Ore mining on the Erzberg has a long tradition, going back at least to the 11th century, and the flourishing mining industry formed the basis of the economic upswing in the Eisenwurzen region and eastern Upper Styria from the 16th to the 20th century. The mining at Erzberg coined the distinguished place of iron ore as a " mining town " and the influx of workers and their families helped him in 1948 to the city charter.

Due to technical innovations in the mining sector itself, but also due to the global crisis in the iron and steel industry in the 1980s, the population shrank to less than a third over the course of half a century: in 2017, around 4,200 people lived in iron ore, compared to the 1950s it still nearly 15,000. For decades the "once proud Styrian mining town has been struggling with emigration , vacancies and aging ". In order to cope with its structural problems, the city has been carrying out the 15-year Template: future / in 5 yearsurban development program "re-design Eisenerz" since 2005 in order to "give the old mountain town of Eisenerz a new, future- oriented image ".

The art consultant and cultural manager Gerhild Illmaier ( alias GIL ), who comes from Eisenerz and runs a consulting agency in Graz , proposed the inclusion of art and culture in the urban development of her place of birth in the mid-2000s. In 2006, the mayor of Eisenerz commissioned her with an artistic concept for the city, which Illmaier developed with the partial collaboration of the sociologist Rainer Rosegger and presented in 2008. The concept showed the fundamentals of the possibilities for developing art and cultural projects in and around Eisenerz. Since then, a cultural initiative founded has been committed to the resulting art and culture project eisenerZ * ART , which was officially started in 2010. The concept for eisenerZ * ART developed by Illmaier is implemented by the association of the same name in cooperation with the municipality of Eisenerz. Gerhild Illmaier is responsible for the artistic direction and production management. The city assigned the project the task of contributing to the “re-design Eisenerz” urban development program, which will run until 2020, by promoting “increasing the quality of life”.

The “mining performance for the anniversary of 1300 years of ore mining on the Styrian Erzberg” was awarded several prizes.

Rustproof

As a recurring part of eisenerZ * ART, the three-day festival Rostfest ( own spelling ROSTFEST ) was held annually from 2012 to 2016 . The "Festival for regional impulses" played on vacant rooms in Eisenerz and addressed regional development opportunities. An offer with now more than 100 program items such as exhibitions, concerts , readings and performances covered the entire city and dealt with the region and its challenges with the participation of the local population. The festivals attracted up to 5,000 visitors annually; During the festival, around 800 mostly young people moved into vacant workers ' apartments as " urban camping " in the former miners' settlement of Münichtal on the outskirts of Eisenerz. Admission to the previous festivals was free, but visitors were able to purchase “rust parts” and thus support the event financially. Various projects in the region were started as part of the rust festival, for example Günther Friesinger (with monochrom ) designed the construction plan for a local hack lab .

The sponsor and organizer of the festival is the Verein Rostfrei - Association for regional impulses . In 2017, the sponsoring association did not organize a festival and stated that the interruption was necessary in order to be able to “adapt the organizational structure and the programmatic orientation to the growth process of recent years”.
