Rudolph von Roman

Rudolph Ernst Philipp August Freiherr von Roman zu Schernau (born December 1, 1836 in Leider bei Aschaffenburg, † January 8, 1917 in Würzburg ) was the district president of Upper Franconia and an honorary citizen of Bayreuth from 1893 to 1909 .

Career start

Rudolph von Roman was born on December 1st, 1836, the eldest of eight children as the son of a chamberlain and manor owner in Leider near Aschaffenburg. After graduating from high school, he studied law and political science at the universities of Würzburg and Heidelberg . During his studies he joined the Corps Bavaria Würzburg . In 1860 he passed the state examination in law and decided to become an administrative officer .

Career path to Bayreuth

The first milestone in his career was his appointment to the board of the Munich district office on the left of the Isar in 1876 , where he was responsible for improving the road system. This is why Romanstrasse in Munich is still named after him today. After working in Lower Franconia , Upper Bavaria and Central Franconia , he was on 16 September 1893 as successor to Karl Alexander von Burchtorff to the provincial government of Upper Franconia appointed in Bayreuth.

Services in Bayreuth

Together with the Mayor of Bayreuth Theodor Muncker , Roman promoted the Bayreuth Festival and improved the transport system in the Bayreuth area. After Bayreuth, as the district capital, was overlooked in the construction of long-distance connections in the 1840s, he succeeded in building at least a number of railways into the Franconian Forest , Franconian Switzerland and the Fichtel Mountains , although a direct connection between Bayreuth and Bamberg was ultimately not realized could. He ensured a great boom in trade and industry, as well as in trade and craft and, with his experience as a farmer, contributed a lot to the promotion of Upper Franconian agriculture. To this end, he promoted the Upper Franconian cities, of which Bayreuth and Forchheim granted him honorary citizenship. Rudolph von Roman brought his greatest achievements in welfare and health care, to the Red Cross and through his participation in the establishment of the Upper Franconian lung sanatorium . For these services he was honored as an honorary citizen of the city of Bayreuth on his 70th birthday on December 1, 1906.

End of life

Roman remained in office for sixteen years until he retired in 1909. In retirement he moved first to Nuremberg and later to Würzburg , where he finally died on January 8, 1917.
