Rumilly, Hôtel de Ville (Town Hall)

Rumilly is a French municipality with 15,379 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . The municipality is associated with the Massif des Bauges Regional Nature Park as an access point .

Rumilly is about 15 kilometers (as the crow flies) west of Annecy on the river Chéran .

history

Even the Romans recognized in the 2nd century BC The strategic importance of the place and built a bridge and a fortified structure at the confluence of the Nephaz and Chéran rivers . The developing place was called Romillia. In the 10th century, the Counts of Geneva and the Bishops of Geneva owned the place and built a castle on the site of the old Roman citadel. In the 15th century, the Dukes of Savoy expanded the city's defense system. In 1419 the place belonged to Duke Amadeus VIII of Savoy.

In 1630 Louis XIII conquered . Rumilly and ruined castle and fortifications. In 1690 a resistance against the troops of Louis XIV was formed under the command of General St. Ruth. Several people were killed in the fighting on August 15, 1690. In 1742 Savoy and Rumilly were occupied by Spanish troops during the War of the Austrian Succession (1740–1748). In the 19th century, the construction of a train station on the Aix-les-Bains - Annemasse line brought a teacher training college (1860) and the first industries to the city. For years a tobacco factory was the largest employer.

Town twinning

The twin town of Rumilly is Michelstadt in the Odenwald, state of Hesse in Germany. The Italian city of Maglie in Apulia has also been a twin town since November 2018 .
