St. Georgen am Reith (also Sankt Georgen am Reith ) is an Austrian municipality with 542 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Amstetten district in Lower Austria .

geography

St. Georgen am Reith is located in the Mostviertel in Lower Austria. The municipality extends over a length of about ten kilometers along the Ybbs . 77.32% of the area of ​​the municipality is forested.

history

The area was already settled by the Romans in ancient times, it was part of the Noricum province .

The place was administered by the rule of Gleiß . In 1192 the manorial rule came into possession of the Passau bishopric until secularization .

Population development

St. Georgen had the most inhabitants with 1,017 people in 1923. This is very likely because the construction of the pipeline (culvert bridge) took place from 1922 to 1924. At the next census in 1934 there were only 676 inhabitants. At the 1971 census there were 604 people. Since then, the population has always been below 600 people, in 2019 it was 549 people.

  • Parish Church of St. Georgen am Reith : built around 1500, Gothic. The interior is designed in the late Gothic style. Remarkable mask relief on the tower - probably from the Celtic era.
  • Hunting lodge: A hunting lodge is located on the edge of the forest, in the middle of a more than 10,000 m² park. The castle is privately owned and used to be a hotel.
  • Culvert bridge: The pipe bridge (40 meters span; construction started in 1922) is used to cross the Ybbs and directs the water to the Opponitz power station , which is owned by the City of Vienna.

Statistics Austria identified 287 employed persons in 2011, 6 of whom were unemployed. 79 people were self-employed, 66 of them in agriculture and forestry. The general activity rate was 49.8%.

  • Train / bus: St. Georgen am Reith had a station on the narrow-gauge Ybbstalbahn of the ÖBB . The narrow-gauge railway was discontinued in 2010 for economic reasons and replaced by a bus connection.
