history

The forest hoof village Schwand was first mentioned in 1418 as Swant . Since this document was about the division of several goods, the place probably existed a long time before it was first mentioned. The horseshoe shape of the place suggests a Slavic origin. The place name is derived from the word "schwanden" (fire-clearing). Schwand was one of the largest towns in the Vogtland until the 19th century, after which the population steadily decreased.

Regarding the manorial rule , Schwand belonged partly to the manors Schwand, Geilsdorf and Kürbitz , and as an official village to the Plauen office . In 1764 Schwand belonged proportionally to the manors Schwand, Geilsdorf, Kröstau and as an official village to the Plauen office. The Schwand manor was owned by Conrad von Geilsdorf in 1373 , but it already existed before that. In the first half of the 16th century, the Schwand manor came into the possession of the von Feilitzsch family , who owned it until the beginning of the 18th century. The von Tattenbach and von Beulwitz families followed the von Feilitzsch family as owners. Since 1868 Ferdinand von Nauendorf owned the Schwand manor, of which it was Dr. Walther Naumann zu Königsbrück bought. The city of Plauen had owned the estate since 1928 . The Romanesque church of Schwand dates from the 12th century. Until the fire in 1869 it had a hipped roof and a wooden battlement.

Until 1856 Schwand belonged to the Electoral Saxon or Royal Saxon Office of Plauen . In 1856 the place was affiliated with the Plauen court office and in 1875 with the Plauen administration . In the second half of the 19th century there was mining activity in the corridors of Schwand, of which no traces are visible today.

On July 1, 1950, the neighboring town of Steins was incorporated. As a result of the second district reform in the GDR , the community of Schwand and Steins became part of the Plauen-Land district in the Chemnitz district (renamed Karl-Marx-Stadt district in 1953 ), which was continued as the Saxon district of Plauen from 1990 onwards.

On January 1, 1994, the municipality of Schwand merged with six other municipalities to form the municipality of Burgstein , which got its name from the Burgstein mountain with its two church ruins. This belonged to the Vogtlandkreis since 1996. Since the incorporation of the municipality of Burgstein into the larger municipality of Weischlitz, Schwand and Steins have been part of Weischlitz since January 1, 2011.
