action

15-year-old Ada is gifted and has already skipped two classes. At the elite private high school in Bonn, which she attends, she is an outsider and considers her classmates to be boring and superficial. After the also extremely intelligent and also very charismatic new 18-year-old student Alev came into her class, the loner not only feels drawn to the handsome boy, but also finds a soul mate in him. Alev seems almost aloof and almost demonic, but precisely this aura and his self-confident and cool manner trigger a fascination in Ada that goes as far as physical attraction.

Alev, on the other hand, who regularly visits strip clubs but pretends not to be able to enter into a love affair with Ada because he is impotent, uses his intelligence mainly to provoke his fellow men. Nevertheless, the two students get closer and Alev tells Ada about his theory of the play instinct . In his opinion, all human actions represent game actions. Therefore, people like game characters can be controlled manipulatively. For his next game, Alev depends on Ada's help. He gets the virgin Ada to seduce her German and sports teacher Smutek, who is going through a difficult time with his wife, in the school's gymnasium while he films the two of them from a hiding place.

Although Ada feels pity for her teacher, who is now being repeatedly forced to have sex, she finds that the perfidious game of power and passion, from which no one can emerge as a winner, has gotten out of control. The initially clear distribution of roles begins to blur until Ada is no longer clear who her real opponent is. Although she feels sympathy for her teacher, she does not shy away from blackmailing him for 5000 euros in order to pay her outstanding school fees. When she confesses her love to Smutek a short time later and plans to run away with him, Alev explains to her that he is interchangeable like a character and that he does not feel any emotions towards her. For Ada there are too many feelings involved in her love triangle with both men. Alev, on the other hand, enjoys Ada's dependence on him.

Smutek provocatively reveals to Alev that he only used him to make Ada compliant for his own purposes. The game is over. He leaves open what should happen to the videos on the school's website that Smutek and Ada show. In the intoxication of emotions, the teacher lets himself be carried away to attack Alev and beat him to the hospital. The emergency services who are called arrest Smutek and take Alev to the hospital, where he is visited by Ada, who continues to have feelings for him.

The three meet again at the trial over the physical assault between Smutek and Alev. When questioning witnesses, Alev does not mention that the sex scenes he filmed between the defendant and Ada led to the physical confrontation. Smutek remains silent about the allegations of bashing Alev for no reason, knowing full well what sentence he would face. However, because Ada does not want to leave Smutek to his threatening fate, she revises her previous statement and reveals that she has had sexual relations with her teacher. According to her, the reason was the suicide of her philosophy teacher and mentor Höfi, to whom she had a strong intellectual relationship. Her deep sorrow for him drove her into the arms of Smutek, with whom she had been in love before. She acted of her own accord, while Smutek fought against the relationship with his wards. Smutek confirms what she said. He is then sentenced to a suspended prison term. Alev is convicted of extortion, among other things, and his six-month youth sentence is suspended.

During a trip to the Oracle of Delphi , Ada reflects on her experiences.

reception

With playfulness Schnitzler after assessing whether German Film and Media Review "managed a skillful implementation of provocative and successful submission of Juli Zeh" . The actors “shine” , including Michelle Barthel, who plays “believable” , who is “an absolute stroke of luck” , but Jannik Schümann is also “perfectly cast and plays great” in a role that shows “charismatic and almost diabolical presence” . Maximilian Brückner and Richy Müller also know how to “convince” in their roles . Thanks to "its ingenious, cool images and its theatrical literary language" , the film appears "like a perfectly aestheticized video clip" . Schnitzler succeeded in "a cinematic demanding and congenial implementation of a polarizing subject" .

The "between" Cruel Intentions "and" Shades of Gray «relocated scandal-soap" scratch, according to Christoph Petersen film starts "only on the surface" of the "complex moral questions of the book" . Nevertheless, Schnitzler succeeds in creating "a coherent and intense portrait of his two philosophical protagonists" . Thus was playfulness "become a German version of the stylish and provocative teenage Intrigante barn" Cruel Intentions "- and indeed not a bad" The "great actress" Michelle Barthel , the "love-crazed protagonist" plays Ada, just as impressive as "always interspersed, deliberately cool, dry nihilism dialogues ” . The instinct to play is "stylish, sexy and provocative" and thus "a really chic high-gloss staging that is really chic for most of the time" that "doesn't need to hide from the Hollywood competition" . Director Schnitzler moves through the production "self-confident and style-conscious" , "even if the film, with its staunch focus compared to the novel, turns out to be at most half as radical as its teenage anti-heroes who risk everything for a simple game" . Ultimately, a less original, but stylishly filmed and intensely played variant of "Eiskalte Engel" without any German pity " emerged from the " provocative-philosophical bestseller " . Petersen awarded three out of five possible points.

"Music, camera and the perfect montage are further successful components of an exceptionally good film worth discussing" , the shooting of which, according to Schnitzler, was "a borderline step" for the actors and for himself , wrote Torsten Lorenz from Style One magazine.

In the “breathtaking story of an obsessive love that ends in an abysmal game of passion, blackmail and power,” the leading roles are “excellent” according to the assessment of Michelle Barthel, Jannik Schümann, Maximilian Brückner, Sophie von Kessel, Richy Müller and Ulrike Folkerts occupied " .

The dpa editorial team writes that the "film story only adheres to the original" and "concentrates [...] on the demonstration of immoral behavior" , "where the novel, with rich philosophical digressions, initiates a discussion on questions of morality" . "In terms of acting, Michelle Barthel, who has already appeared successfully in several television films, was particularly impressive as Ada in her first leading role in the cinema, and Ulrike Folkerts, who became famous as the« Tatort »commissioner, played her mother," the verdict continues. Director Schnitzler, who “obviously deliberately largely dispenses with a harmonizing or smooth narrative” , said: “A film like this should polarize. If we only make adapted films, nobody will deal with it. "

Martin Schwickert from Ultimo magazine is of the opinion that director Schnitzler develops “a good feeling for the emotional hinterland of his characters who experiment with power, manipulation and ultimately also with their own emotions” and convinces “through a concentrated narrative that is rarely out of the the shielded world of the school ” .

According to the editorial staff of the Cineplex , Michelle Barthel plays “her most daring and best role to date” in the film . “That doesn't make up for the fact that the psychological thriller about a calculating couple works in a psychologically striking way and was staged by Gregor Schnitzler without any distance,” says the editorial staff of the Cineplex. "Almost all actors are" crime scene "faces" in this "soul striptease" , which is "not a really good cinema sign" .
