Spirit is a 2002 cartoon directed by Kelly Asbury and Lorna Cook . Was produced Spirit - Stallion of the Cimarron by Jeffrey Katzenberg , who has with Shrek - The daring hero had had great success in 2001. As with The Lion King , traditional 2D hand drawing was combined with CGI computer animation technology. In 2003 it was nominated for an Oscar for best animated film. The animation series Spirit: wild and free , which has been produced since 2017, is based on the film .
The special thing about the film is that, unlike in many DreamWorks productions, the animals do not speak. Almost all communication takes place through facial expressions and animal noises. The thoughts of Spirit, originally spoken by Matt Damon , can only be heard occasionally . The feelings of Spirit are conveyed through songs by Bryan Adams (original version) and Hartmut Engler from Pur (German version).

The film is set in the American West of the 19th century and tells the story of the young mustang Spirit. He grows up next to his mother Esperanza and under the protection of his herd near the Cimarron River (Spanish for Mustang). As an adult stallion, like his father before, he takes on the role of the lead stallion and thus leads the group. He is a brave and brave leader, but also stands out for his mischievous and curious behavior. One day his curiosity becomes his undoing when he meets people and is caught by them after a turbulent chase. They take him to a fort , where he meets the Colonel and is to be tamed . However, all attempts to tame the proud animal fail.
At this time the Army is in the middle of the Indian Wars and soon after Spirit's arrival a young Lakota is brought into the fort by the soldiers. Little Creek (as the Indian is called) is also held captive and soon manages to attract the stallion's attention. The next day the weakened spirit is to be ridden personally by the Colonel, who wants to demonstrate that every horse can be tamed. After the Colonel's initial success, Spirit regains his courage to face life and, together with Little Creek, manages to escape from the fort. The Mustang's joy is short-lived, because soon the escaped meet Little Creek's mare Rain and other Indians, who recapture the stallion .
Little Creek really wants to ride the beautiful stallion and tries to tame him with his own methods. However, he fails too and finally he ties Spirit and Rain together with a rope so that the mare can teach the wild stallion manners. Rain shows the high-spirited spirit her world and soon he falls in love with the cheeky, piebald mare. The longing for freedom and its flock is not diminished by this.
Spirit and Little Creek eventually become friends, but the Indian realizes that the stallion can never be tamed and decides to release him. Spirit wants to ask Rain to come with him, but suddenly the Lakota village is attacked by the Colonel and his soldiers. During the attack, Rain is shot by the Colonel and falls into a raging river. Spirit manages to save Little Creek's life, then he chases after Rain and the two horses tumble down a waterfall. Spirit finds the seriously injured mare on the riverbank and stays with her until soldiers appear and take the stallion away. Shortly thereafter, Little Creek appears and vows to free the mustang who saved his life.
Spirit is loaded into railroad cars with other horses and does not know where it is being taken. He almost lost his courage when the thought of his mother and his flock gave him new strength. When he arrives at his destination, he and other horses are harnessed to a steam locomotive that is to be pulled over a mountain and is needed to expand the railway line. When Spirit notices that people are moving towards his home, he feigns exhaustion and thereby manages to tear himself away. He can cut the chains that connect the horses to the locomotive. This releases them and the steam locomotive falls into the valley, collides with another locomotive and causes an explosion. While trying to escape the fire, Spirit gets caught on a tree trunk and at the last moment can be freed from the suddenly appearing Little Creek.
Little Creek and Spirit experience a happy reunion that comes to an abrupt end the next morning. The Colonel and some soldiers find them and again they have to flee. A daring chase ensues that leads to the Grand Canyon and which Little Creek and Spirit can finally win when they can outrun their pursuers by a huge jump over a wide gorge. The Colonel is so impressed by their courage that he stops chasing them.
Spirit and Little Creek return to the Indian village and the Mustang can hardly believe his eyes when he meets Rain there. With a heavy heart, Little Creek says goodbye to the two horses, who soon start the long journey to Spirit's home together. Once there, they are happily welcomed by the herd and Spirit takes on his task as the lead stallion again, with Rain at his side.

Meaning of the names in brackets
- Spirit (spirit, soul)
- Leader of the Cimarron Herd. He is a mustang with the color buckskin and four black "booted" legs. A wild, strong, idiosyncratic and curious young stallion. In the course of the film he is separated from his flock and does whatever it takes to regain his freedom.
- Rain
- Little Creek Indian boy's mare. She is a piebald and has a rams head . The mare is smart, a bit stubborn and trusts her owner completely. At the end of the film, she returns to his herd with Spirit.
- Little Creek
