St. Johannes Evangelist (Gürzenich)
St. Johannes Evangelist is a Roman Catholic parish church in the Düren district of Gürzenich in the Düren district , North Rhine-Westphalia .
The church building is entered in the list of architectural monuments in Düren under number 6/11 and is dedicated to St. Evangelist consecrated to John .
history
A church in Gürzenich was first mentioned in writing in the Liber valoris from 1308, but there was probably a church in Gürzenich much earlier. At that time the place was already an independent parish . Initially, the Knights of Echtz had the right of collation . In 1359 the church was incorporated into the Wilhelmite monastery Zum Paradies in Düren. After the monastery was destroyed in 1543, the Schellards, a family from Gürzenich, acted as patrons.
Building history
The parish church mentioned in 1308 was a simple Romanesque hall building . In 1575 the church got a new tower, 30 years later a choir was added. In 1729 Wilhelm von Schellard gave the church a new main altar. In 1806 an extension was added to the church. In the middle of the 19th century, the church became too small and also dilapidated, so that the construction of today's parish church was decided.
The foundation stone of today's parish church was laid on September 5, 1856. Two years later the new church was completed, so that in 1858 the old, Romanesque-Gothic church was demolished. This previous church was located in the old cemetery roughly where the war memorial stands today. The solemn church consecration and consecration was carried out by the Cologne auxiliary bishop Johann Anton Friedrich Baudri on October 7, 1860. The plans for the construction of the parish church came from the hands of the later Cologne diocesan master builder Vincenz Statz .
In the 1920s or 1930s the tower was structurally changed by removing the balustrade on the fourth floor and the four branch towers. The church was badly damaged in World War II . In particular, the south side of the nave and the tower were affected. So all tracery of the windows on the south side were destroyed and the main portal in the tower. After the war, the main portal was rebuilt and new tracery was not installed on the south side.
Building description
St. Johannes Evangelist is a three-aisled hall church made of bricks in the neo-Gothic style . The nave consists of six bays . This is followed by the one-yoke and five-sided choir . The four-story bell tower is built in front of the nave in the west . While the lower three floors are square, the upper floor, on which the bells also hang, is octagonal and crowned by an eight-sided tower dome. Due to the distance between the balustrade and the branch turret around the fourth floor, the transition between square and rectangle (third to fourth floor) appears quite hard. The nave is vaulted with cross ribs and the choir with star vaults .
Furnishing
Particularly noteworthy is the triptych altar, a Dutch work from 1520, which was taken from the old church. The neo-Gothic furnishings were almost completely removed in 1955, so that today's furnishings are modern. The windows are works by Johannes Beeck from 1955. While the windows in the nave show ornaments, the windows in the choir depict Mary , Christ as Judge of the World , John the Evangelist and Hubertus von Lüttich .
organ
The organ is a work of the organ building company Karl Kamp from Aachen from 1951 and has 22 registers . It replaces the previous organ that was destroyed in the war. The instrument was renovated and slightly changed in 1977 by master organ builder Peter Berretz from Eschweiler.

The remaining three bells were cast in the Mabilon bell foundry in Saarburg in the 1950s.
