history

Wilhelm Hector: Unexecuted design drawing for the new building of the Saardome , 1906 ( Parish Archives Holy Sacrament, Dillingen / Saar)
Fritzlar Cathedral

The predecessor of today's church was a hall church built in 1826 . In the 1860s, district architect Carl Friedrich Müller ( Saarlouis ) made a sketch of a plan for a new building. A gallery was built in the still existing parish church in 1873 as part of a renovation and restoration project .

In the years 1907 to 1909, the current church building was finally built according to the plans of the architect Wilhelm Hector ( Saarbrücken-St. Johann ) from Roden . As early as 1906, Hector had submitted an architectural draft for the new building of the Dillinger Saardome , which was similar to the Püttling building, but was not implemented in Dillingen . St. Sebastian is even more similar to the double tower facade of the Fritzlar Cathedral redesigned by Carl Schäfer in the 1870s .

From 1979 to 1984 the Püttlinger church was subjected to a restoration under the direction of the architect Elmar Kraemer (Saarbrücken). In 1993/1994 the restoration of the two towers took place .

On December 19, 2004, the ZDF broadcast Christmas with the Federal President and Horst Köhler was recorded. In 2008 the church building was again restored.

The church building was built by the architect Wilhelm Hector in the neo-Romanesque style, who took the Maria Laach Abbey in the Eifel as a model. Built a three-nave pillar basilica , divided into three bays with the nave only slightly superior transept . The transept and vaulted areas of the central nave are square, with one area of the central nave corresponding to two yokes of the side aisles . The pillars are built according to the "Echternach system", which means that the larger arches , which are stretched from pillar to pillar, are further subdivided by smaller double arches that rest on pillars. The choir in the east is divided into three sections, each ending in apses . In the west the church building has a double tower facade .

In the interior of the church, the neo-Romanesque baldachin altar , which used to function as a high altar , was created by the sculptors Karl Frank ( Trier ) and Wilhelm Dreiser ( Bitburg ). It is one of the few canopy altars of this style in the Diocese of Trier and, apart from details, an almost exact replica (but without a dome) of the canopy donated by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1897 above the sacrament altar in the Maria Laach abbey church.

The wooden ambo, which was created in 1984, comes from woodcarver and local researcher Willibald Meyer (Püttlingen) . The new sacrificial altar was also created in 1984 and comes from the Göllner company (Saarbrücken). The large altar cross hanging above the altar is made as a trefoil cross and shows the triumphant Christ with a royal crown , which is based on Romanesque depictions of the crucifixion . A scaled-down replica of the altar cross is the cross of the high altar, which is held in gold as a standing cross.

The baptismal font of the church is decorated with ornaments and symbols and rests on four small columns made of red marble . All representations on the tub of the baptismal font all refer to baptism and show the Christ monogram with a lamb, the hand of God , the Holy Spirit in the form of the dove and fish after the catch. The cover of the basin, completely embossed in brass, with the symbolic figures of the four evangelists , is richly decorated and covered with gold . The communion bench was also made by the artist who created the baptismal font .

The furnishings of the church also include numerous figures of saints . In the choir of the church there is a Sacred Heart and a Sacred Heart. In the nave there are figures, some of which still come from the old church, such as the statue of St. Joseph, St. Peter and St. Francis . Further figures are those of St. Elisabeth , St. Anna with the child, St. Barbara and St. Theresa of the Child Jesus .

Other parts of the furnishings include a relief of the first German Redemptorist , St. Clemens Maria Hofbauer , which reminds of the Holy Cross Monastery of the Redemptorists in Püttlingen, the icon of Perpetual Help and the statue of St. Anthony with the baby Jesus under the gallery, where also a commemorative plaque for Josef Clemens Cardinal Maurer, who was born in Püttlingen, is attached.

The church also has a memorial chapel for warriors, in which there is a Pietà created in 1910 . The chapel window, created in 1959, shows the risen Christ in the Easter sun.

Artists who were involved in the design of the church are Felix Baumhauer ( Munich ), who designed four new windows in 1953 , which were made by the Hofkunstanstalt Mayer (Munich), painter and sculptor Ernst Alt (Saarbrücken), who between 1991 and 1992 four bronze altar pendants cast in Cologne , a Pietà, two reliefs and four bronze bucraniums , as well as the sculptor Konrad Schmitt ( Trier ) from whom the figures of St. Michael and St. Sebastian on pedestals to the left and right of the main portal , created in 2004, come.

The sacred art of the church includes the baroque altar leaves in the transept with depictions of the martyrdom of St. Sebastian and St. Vitus , as well as a seated Madonna from the 14th century.

Bells

After the church was built, the bells had to be handed in twice for war purposes. The first time in 1917, whereby the smallest bell did not have to be turned off, and in 1942, after a new bell was purchased in 1922. In March 1950 the Paccard company in Annecy (France) was able to order four new bells, which were solemnly consecrated on Ascension Day of the same year.
