The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Thomas von Aquin in Trockau , a district of the town of Pegnitz in the Upper Franconian district of Bayreuth , is a modern church that was built in 1949/1950 according to plans by the Nuremberg architect Gerhard G. Dittrich . In 2010 the church was named a motorway church.

Location and surroundings

The parish church is located at the highest point in the village of Trockau, which lies on the eastern slope of Franconian Switzerland . The church, about 250 meters west of the federal motorway 9 , one of the most heavily used motorways in Europe , is easily visible from the valley bridge Trockau . The motorway church is around 500 meters from the Trockau junction . To the southeast of the church is the local cemetery .

history

The foundation stone for the church in Trockau was laid on August 5, 1949. On November 15, 1950, the church was consecrated . Due to the scarce financial resources in the post-war period , investments were made in the bare minimum. For example, the Way of the Cross was not completed until 1958. The church tower was only built in 1969. The large cemetery cross and the war memorial were created three years later . In 1976 a new organ was purchased, which had to be completely overhauled in 1993. In 1978, today's popular altar was moved to the parish church. The most serious structural intervention to date was carried out in the 1980s. To the east of the existing church building, a separate structure was built for the sacristy and winter church, which was connected to the nave via glazed passages .

After the Archbishop of Bamberg , Ludwig Schick , and the Evangelical Regional Bishop of Bayreuth , Dorothea Greiner , had already given their consent in November 2009, St. Thomas Aquinas became a motorway church by a letter from the Federal Minister of Transport at the time, Peter Ramsauer , on February 15, 2010 appointed. In 2011 the baptistery in the southwest was redesigned into a prayer room for travelers.

description

Exterior construction

The parish church forms an elongated structure, which consists predominantly of unplastered sandstone , and has a steeply rising, tile-covered gable roof . The choir faces south. The tower attached to the southwest is plastered and ends with a steep, tile-covered pyramid roof . On the northwest side there is an apsidal extension that used to be a baptistery, now a prayer room for travelers.

A side aisle and a row of arcades were added between the tower and the prayer room . There are no such additions on the east side. Here - separated from the main nave - is a newer structure, which houses the sacristy and winter church. This is connected to the main church via two glazed passages.

Sanctuary

Interior view towards the south

On the back wall of the retracted chancel there is a larger than life representation of Jesus crucified as Christ the King . The Holy Spirit dove can be seen in the upper arm of the cross . The representation is flanked by two floating angels and backlit by a stained glass window . At the foot of the cross there are pictures of the twelve apostles in small arched niches framed by bricks . Below is the canteen of the high altar with the gold-plated tabernacle .

The March 4, 1978 consecrated people's altar whose base a relief representation of the washing of the feet of Peter shows through Christ. On the ambo you can see another relief depicting an angel showing the community an open Bible . In place of the right side altar there is a larger than life figure of the Mother of God with child . Opposite is the baptismal font since the baptistery was dissolved. This has a lattice at the base with the inscription “My baptismal ribbon should always be there”.

Nave

The nave, the inner walls of which are structured by pillars made of hard-burned brick, has an open roof structure . The west side aisle is separated by round arches, which are framed by brick pilaster strips . The modern Stations of the Cross cycle, completed in 1958, includes fourteen colored ceramic pictures. The stained glass windows in the nave show the diocese saints Emperor Heinrich and Empress Kunigunde as well as Saint Elisabeth and her brother Konrad . Next to the Marien altar is a memorial chapel at the end of the western aisle, above the altar of which a Pietà is depicted in the glass window . A holy grave is located here during Holy Week .
