Stanley Paul "Stan" Jones (born November 24, 1931 in Altoona , Pennsylvania , † May 21, 2010 in Broomfield , Colorado ) was an American American football player and coach . He played in the National Football League (NFL) with the Chicago Bears and Washington Redskins on the offensive and on the defensive line .

youth

Stan Jones was born in Altoona, but grew up in Harrisburg . His father Paul Jones worked there for a telephone company . From 1945 he attended high school , where he played football, but also attracted attention as a track and field athlete . After graduating from school in 1949, he received a scholarship to the University of Maryland .

Player career

College career

Stan Jones studied at the University of Maryland from 1950 to 1953. He played college football for the local team, the Maryland Terrapins , as a tackle, both on the offensive line and on the defensive line. In 1951, his team won all ten games. This took them first in the Southern Conference and third in the national college championship. On January 1, 1952 Jones played with his team in the Sugar Bowl against the University of Tennessee , which took first place with their team in the national college championship. The Terrapins won the game 28:13. The following year they eventually won the championship in the Atlantic Coast Conference and were named national titleholders. That year, the Terrapins also qualified for the Orange Bowl . The game against the University of Oklahoma was lost 7-0.

1953 was also a successful year for Stan Jones personally. He was voted All-American that year , received the Knute Rockne Award and also took part in the College All-Star Game against the Detroit Lions . In the years 1951-1953 Stanley Jones was recognized by his college for his athletic achievements.

Professional career

In 1953, Stan Jones was of the of George Halas supervised Chicago Bears in the fifth round at the 54th spot drafted . However, Jones could not immediately appear for the Bears, he first had to do his military service in the US Army . In Fort Belvoir , Virginia , he played on a military team and was trained by Al Davis . After finishing his military service, Jones could appear for the first time for the Bears in 1954. The Bears were one of the top teams in the NFL, numerous all-star players such as Ed Sprinkle , George Blanda , Harlon Hill and Bill George were under contract with the Bears.

1956 Paddy Driscoll had taken over the coaching office with the Bears and Jones could move with his team for the first time in the NFL championship game . Opponents were the New York Giants , who were able to prevail against the Bears with 47: 7. In 1963 Stan Jones was able to move into the NFL final for the second time with the Bears. The Bears, who have now been trained by George Halas again, had won eleven of 14 games in the regular season and met the Giants again in the final. This time the team from Illinois got the upper hand with 14:10.

After the 1965 season, Jones moved to the Washington Redskins supervised by Otto Graham and ended his playing career after another round in 1966.

Coaching career

In 1998 he returned to football again and took a position as assistant coach with the Scottish Claymores in the NFL Europe (NFLE).

Off the field

Stan Jones was married. His wife died in 2002. He himself died in 2010 of a stroke . Stan Jones left a daughter and three sons. His grave is unknown.

Honors

Stanley Jones played in the Pro Bowl seven times and was voted All-Pro six times . He is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame , the College Football Hall of Fame , the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, and the University of Maryland Athletic Hall of Fame. The Chicago Bears honor him in their Hall of Fame and on the Chicago Bears Ring of Honor.
