Stuart Skelton (born January 1, 1968 in Sydney ) is an Australian opera singer with a tenor voice ( hero tenor ).

Life

education

Stuart Skelton studied in his hometown of Sydney and at the Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati .

Career

The repertoire of Skelton includes many challenging roles of the opera, including Richard Wagner's Lohengrin, Parsifal, Rienzi, Siegmund in Die Walküre and Erik in The Flying Dutchman to Richard Strauss ' Kaiser in Die Frau ohne Schatten and Bacchus in Ariadne auf Naxos , I, Camille Saint-Saëns ' Samson in Samson et Dalila , Ludwig van Beethoven's Florestan in Fidelio and Benjamin Britten's Peter Grimes in the opera of the same name.

His voice and musical prowess have taken Skelton to the leading concert and opera stages in the world, including Berlin , Hamburg , London , Madrid , Munich , Paris , Vienna , Beijing , Hong Kong , Shanghai , Tokyo , Los Angeles , New York City , San Francisco and Sydney .

He has worked with conductors such as Vladimir Ashkenazy , Daniel Barenboim , Jiři Bèlohlavek , James Conlon , Sir Andrew Davis , Christoph von Dohnányi , Christoph Eschenbach , Asher Fisch , Mariss Jansons , Philippe Jordan , James Levine , Fabio Luisi , Lorin Maazel , Sir Charles Mackerras , Sir Simon Rattle , David Robertson , Donald Runnicles , Michael Tilson-Thomas and Simone Young and with orchestras such as the Berliner Philharmoniker , the Boston Symphony Orchestra , the Los Angeles Philharmonic , the London Symphony Orchestra , the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra , the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra , the Vienna Philharmonic and the Radio Symphony Orchestras in Hamburg and Frankfurt am Main as well as the symphony orchestras of Sydney, Adelaide , Melbourne , Tasmania and Western Australia .

Skelton's engagements in 2014 included his debut in the title role of Giuseppe Verdi's Otello at the English National Opera in London, the performance of Gustav Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde at the Zurich Opera , and Ludwig van Beethoven's 9th Symphony with the Hamburg Philharmonic under Simone Young and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under Donald Runnicles , Beethoven's Missa Solemnis under Philippe Jordan in the annual TV Christmas concert at La Scala in Milan and a return to his key role as Peter Grimes at the English National Opera in David Alden's acclaimed production. He was also in the title role of Edward Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Sir Andrew Davis, in concert performances of the third act of Richard Wagner's Siegfried with the Opéra national de Bordeaux under Paul Daniel and of Peter Grimes under Michael Tilson-Thomas and to be heard in concerts with Sir Antonio Pappano and the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia .

In 2015 Skelton made his debut as Tristan in Tristan und Isolde with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra under David Robertson. He returned to the Bavarian State Opera as Samson in Samson et Dalila and as Siegmund in Die Walküre . Other engagements in 2015 included Beethoven's Missa Solemnis with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, concert appearances by Peter Grimes with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, Fidelio with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Leoš Janáček's Glagolitic Mass and Arnold Schönberg's Gurre-Lieder with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Mahler's song by the Erde with the Minnesota Symphony Orchestra, Edward Elgar's The Kingdom with the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest and the Royal Flemish Philharmonic, Beethoven's Fidelio with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and Beethoven's 9th Symphony at the Blossom Music Festival with the Cleveland Orchestra.

In 2016 he could be heard at the Easter Festival Baden-Baden and at the English National Opera as Tristan in Tristan und Isolde and in this role opened the 2016/17 opera season of the Metropolitan Opera in New York City together with Nina Stemme , in a new production under the Directed by Sir Simon Rattle. At the Baden-Baden Summer Festival he could also be heard as Siegmund in Die Walküre .

His roles and engagements in 2017 included Lohengrin at the Opéra National de Paris , Laca Klemeň at the Bavarian State Opera and the Munich Opera Festival, Siegmund at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Beijing Music Festival, as Peter Grimes at the Bergen International Festival and at the Edinburgh International Festival, Florestan at the BBC Proms and Otello at the Bergen National Opera.

On August 1, 2019, Stuart Skelton gave a guest performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London with Mahler's song cycle Das Lied von der Erde as part of the BBC Proms summer concert series together with Claudia Mahnke , Leif Ove Andsnes and the BBC Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Edward Gardner .
