Surry is a town in Hancock County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 1,466 inhabitants in 673 households on an area of 132.43 km 2 .

According to the United States Census Bureau , Surry has a total area of 132.43 km², of which 95.75 km² is land and 36.67 km² is made up of water .
Geographical location
Surry is located on Union River Bay in the Atlantic Ocean , in the center of southern Hancock County. The area of the Town is bordered by Toddy Pond to the west and Lower Pattern Pond to the north . In the south, the town ends in a headland that protrudes into the Mount Desert Narrows . The surface is flat, without any significant elevations.

history
Surry was one of six parishes whose grant was given by Kings William and Mary II to David Marsh and 350 other citizens of Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The land allocation was upheld by the Massachusetts court in 1764.
Initially, the area was named Township No. 6 East of Penobscot River (T6 EPR), also Township No. 6, West of the Union River or Pattensborough. The other five townships were Township No. 1 West of Union River , Township No. 2 Orland East of Penobscot River , Plantation No. 3 Penobscot (Castine) , Plantation No. 4 Sedgwick and Plantation No. 5 Blue Hill .
The Town Surry was organized on June 21, 1803. In 1829 land was given to Ellsworth and in 1843 and 1845 Surry got lands from Penobscot.
Surry was an agricultural community that made a living from agriculture and forestry, but was also known for shipbuilding. Granite was also mined. First settled by French settlers near Newburry Neck, English settlers followed Marsh's grant.

From the north, Maine State Route 172 enters the town and leaves it south. It connects Surry to the north with Ellsworth and to the south with Blue Hill. In a westerly direction, Maine State Route 176 leaves Surry.
