The middle and long distance runner became Olympic champion in 1988 .

At the 1987 World Championships in Rome , she won the gold medal in the 1500 and 3000 meters . At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul , she won the bronze medal over 1500 meters behind the Romanian Paula Ivan and her compatriot Laima Baikauskaitė . She won gold over 3000 meters ahead of Paula Ivan and the Briton Yvonne Murray in her personal best of 8: 26.53 minutes. After their marriage, she had a two year break from competition because she became a mother.

At the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo , she won gold over 3000 and silver over 1500 meters. The following year she started for the United Team of the CIS at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona , where she finished fourth over 1500 meters in her personal best of 3: 57.92 minutes and won the silver medal over 3000 meters. Shortly before the 1993 World Championships , she was convicted of doping with stanozolol .

She is married to the former Soviet decathlete Oleksandr Apajtschew (* 1961).
