The 12th stage of the Tour de France 2008 on July 17th was 168.5 kilometers long and ran from Lavelanet to Narbonne . There were two sprint classifications and a fourth category mountain classification on the program.

After Riccardo Riccò EPO doping was proven, the Saunier Duval-Scott team did not take part in the 12th stage.

After five kilometers, Egoi Martínez was able to pull away, initially joined by José Iván Gutiérrez and later by seven other drivers. The attempt to escape was already over at kilometer 12. Then a group of seven tried, which was arrested again shortly afterwards. After a group of two, Arnaud Gérard and Samuel Dumoulin finally managed to pull away after 36 km. Dumoulin won the only mountain classification of the day. Sebastian Lang secured the last mountain point and thus extended his lead in the mountain classification, which he had taken over after Riccardo Riccò and David de la Fuente were eliminated. The lead was more than 4 minutes ahead, after which the field narrowed the gap again. Gerard secured the first sprint classification, Óscar Freire was able to get the last 2 points, thus extending his lead in the sprint classification. Due to the tail wind, 51 km were covered in the first hour. Later, Juan José Oroz drove out of the field and attacked the two leaders. Dumoulin was the first to pass the second sprint classification. The breakaway group was finally set nine kilometers from the finish. The CSC-Saxo Bank team was now working at pace. The goal in Narbonne was reached on a 900 meter long and 8 meter wide home straight. Mark Cavendish won the sprint ahead of Sébastien Chavanel and thus won his third stage of the tour. With Saunier Duval-Scott's departure, the white jersey passed to Vincenzo Nibali before the stage .
