geography
Toyota lies east of Nagoya and north of Okazaki on the banks of the Yahagi .
history
Toyota was originally called Koromo ( 挙 母 ) and was an old castle town in which a branch of the Naitō clan resided in the Edo period . It has had its current name since January 1, 1959. On April 1, 2005, Toyota joined forces with six neighboring communities. The city area grew from 290.11 km² to 918.47 km² and the population from 346,213 to around 406,000.
economy
The mono-industrial economy is shaped by the motor vehicle industry, similar to Wolfsburg in Germany or Detroit in the United States . Toyota Motor Corporation's headquarters and 7 of 12 Japanese plants are located in the city.
Due to the subprime crisis and its consequences for the Toyota concern, the city was missing 750 million euros in corporate tax in 2009 . The city also had the highest unemployment rate in the country.
Many temporary workers come from low-wage countries such as China and Brazil .
