history

The place was probably founded around 995 by Vladiken Štěpán from the Zličany tribe, who built the Štěpánov fortress. Since 1108 Štěpánov belonged to the castle lordship of Leštna nad Sázavou and in 1126 it was first mentioned in a document. In 1235 the Sternbergers bought the place and from 1250 it belonged to the diocese of Prague . After gold was found, 1249 German miners came to Štěpánov, a total of 43 miner families settled there. Bishop Tobias von Bechin gave Štěpánov town charter in 1290. In the 14th century, Štěpánov was an important trading center. East of the city gold mines were operated on the Černé skály in the valley of the Štěpánovský potok. During this time Štěpánov became the seat of the deanery, to which 64 parishes were subordinate. The city had about 800-1000 inhabitants and consisted of 82 houses. There were eight breweries and 21 inns in Štěpánov. When gold mining stopped in 1390, the town became impoverished and the miners moved away. 1406 gave Zbynko Zajíc von Hasenburg Štěpánov further privileges, but subordinated the town to the castle bailiff in Řečice . In the course of his sermon on the Kostelík at Kladruby visited Jan Hus the city. After the Archbishop of Prague Konrad von Vechta converted to the Hussites in 1422 , Štěpánov came to various secular owners and returned to the archbishopric in 1436. In the same year Emperor Sigismund Štěpánov gave together with Keblov, Javorník, Chlum, Lhota, Hulice, Nesměřice, Křivsoudov, Černčice and Strojetice to his follower Nikolaus Trčka von Lípa .

In the 16th century the owners changed in quick succession and in 1596 Petr Karel Holický von Sternberg acquired the town. During the Thirty Years' War, Štěpánov suffered from raids and looting. A little later a plague epidemic broke out. In 1664 Jiří Holický sold the property to Ignaz Bohumír Ritter von Housson. Four years later Maximiliana bought Countess Spaar von Waldstein Štěpánov and in 1687 Franziska Benigna Countess Weissenwolf acquired the town. Subsequently, the princes of Auersperg became owners of Štěpánov. In 1741 a city fire destroyed the castle and 40 houses.

After the abolition of patrimonial , the town belonged to the Vlašim district from 1849. Between 1854 and 1865 Štěpánov suffered from the consequences of several bad harvests. In 1865 a city fire destroyed 21 houses. In the 1890 census, Štěpánov consisted of 211 houses and had 1220 inhabitants. In 1902 the local railway was extended from Beneschau to Wlaschim via Štěpánov to Unterkralowitz . Since 1912 the town has been called Trhový Štěpánov to distinguish it from other places . With the construction of the Švihov dam and the flooding of the old town of Dolní Kralovice, Trhový Štěpánov has been the end of the Benešov railway line since 1974 .
