history

The name of the place refers to a spring that was a destination mainly for pilgrims. This source was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1556, the small logging village developed rather slowly and received market rights in 1782. At the end of the 18th century, the place experienced its first heyday through Joseph Edler von Fürnberg , at that time he was the owner of the Pöggstall estate, expanded the existing timber floodplain and supplied the rapidly growing Vienna with firewood. Glass production was also promoted by him, and some small glassworks were built. The iron content of the spring also made the place a well-known "health bath", in 1795 Franz I acquired the Gutenbrunn estate. The place had a second boom at the beginning of the 20th century, the "Crown Prince Rudolph Steam Saw" opened by the Munk brothers in 1877 was located on the western edge of the town and was taken over in 1919 by Oskar Körner. The so-called “grain factories” with hundreds of workers came into being. These existed until the company closed in 1933.

The Gutenbrunn – Martinsberg industrial line existed between 1922 and 1933 ; it ran from the Martinsberg station to the sawmill in Gutenbrunn and had a 760 mm gauge.

The Weinsbergerwald forest railway was then operated between Gutenbrunn and Bärnkopf between 1920 and 1933 ; it was also designed with a 760 mm gauge and was used to transport wood from the Weinsberger forest.

After the Second World War, the place developed into a tourist center and was the cradle of cross-country skiing in Lower Austria.
