Ultrapar Participações is a Brazilian holding company founded in 1937 and based in São Paulo . The company and its subsidiaries are active in the energy sector, produce oil and natural gas and, as the fourth largest Brazilian company, is Petrobras' largest customer . The group is active in the USA, Uruguay, Mexico, Venezuela, Argentina, Belgium, China and Colombia and is listed on the New York Stock Exchange and the São Paulo Stock Exchange .
The core business with propane and butane gas was founded in 1937 by the emigrated Austrian Ernst Igel . Ultrapar has been the market leader in Brazil for 70 years and reaches 11 million households, which corresponds to a market share of 23%. Since 2013 Ultrapar has been headed by the German Thilo Mannhardt . The company employs around 14,000 people (2016).

Ultrapar is divided into five segments: liquefied gas (Ultragaz) and fuel distribution (Iparinga), chemicals ( Oxiteno ), storage ( Ultracargo ) and drugstores ( Extrafarma ). The largest division is Ipiranga , Brazil's second largest petrol station chain with 7,230 petrol stations and a market share of 22%.
The company also produces ethylene oxide and its derivatives , fatty alcohols and related by-products, and specialty chemicals that are used in a variety of industries including cosmetics , detergents , crop protection products , polyester , packaging , oils and coatings .
