The Asociación Deportiva Unión Magdalena is a Colombian football club from Santa Marta , founded in 1953 and currently playing in the Primera A category.

history

Unión Magdalena became the first club from the Caribbean coast to become Colombian football champions in 1968 . For Unión Magdalena this is so far the greatest success in the club's history. In 1989 Unión Magdalena was able to advance to the final in the cup competition , which was held that year as an alternative to the canceled championship, but was subject to the capital club Independiente Santa Fe .

Unión Magdalena rose in 1999 for the first time in the second division. After two seasons, the club was able to secure promotion again in 2001 in a separate promotion round from three traditional clubs. In the first division Unión was able to reach the final round four times, but rose in 2005 after two bad years.

Since the last relegation in 2005, Unión Magdalena has only played second class. Between 2006 and 2009, the club reached the final round in seven of eight half-series and even the final in Torneo Apertura in 2008 , which was lost to Deportivo Rionegro .

After 2010, Unión Magdalena's performance initially weakened. In 2012 and 2013, the club then reached the final of the Torneo Apertura , losing it in 2012 to América de Cali and in 2013 to Uniautónoma FC . In the 2014 Hinserie the club was eliminated in the quarterfinals on penalties against Atlético Bucaramanga . In the back series Unión Magdalena reached the group stage again, but did not reach the final. Also in the special promotion round for traditional clubs of the second division in January 2015, the club just missed promotion.

In the 2015 season , Unión Magdalena was able to reach the group stage, but was last in Group B. In 2016 , the club clearly missed the final round.

After a poor start to the 2017 season , Argentinian coach Gustavo Onaindia resigned in March . For him, Nilton Bernal was signed . The club then finished the Apertura 2017 in 13th place and thus clearly missed out on the final round. In August 2017, Nilton Bernal was replaced by Harold Rivera . Also in the Finalización 2017 Unión Magdalena missed out on the tenth place in the final round.

The 2018 season was very successful for Unión Magdalena. As the strongest offensive team in the league, the club finished the league phase in second place and was able to win Group B in the final round. As runner-up, Unión Magdalena rose to the first division for the first time since 2005.

In the first half of the series in the first division, Apertura 2019 , Unión Magdalena qualified eighth for the final round, but finished the group there in last place. For the return series, Harold Rivera was replaced by Pedro Enrique Sarmiento .

Stadion

From 2018 the new home stadium of Unión Magdalena will be the Estadio Sierra Nevada in Santa Marta , which was newly built for the Juegos Bolivarianos 2017.

Unión Magdalena originally played its home games at the Estadio Eduardo Santos . The stadium was inaugurated in 1951 and has a capacity of around 23,000 seats. However, since it was closed due to dilapidation, the club has played in various stadiums since 2013, including in Riohacha , at the Estadio Federico Serrano Soto . For the 2014 season, a new stadium was built in Ciénaga to be able to play again in Magdalena. The Estadio Municipal de Ciénaga has a capacity of around 5000 seats. In the Hinserie of the 2016 season, the club played again in Riohacha due to conflicts with the city administration in Ciénaga. In the 2017 season Unión Magdalena played its home games at the Estadio Diego de Carvajal in Magangué .

Known players

The Colombian football legend Carlos Valderrama began his professional playing career at Unión Magdalena between 1981 and 1983.
