history
In 1535 Franz Batthyány brought Croatians threatened by Turkish territories as settlers to the villages of Rauhriegel and Podler.
In 1650, Count Ádám I. Batthyány settled 14 predominantly Croatian families in Podler and granted them privileges. According to the names of the families, Germans and Hungarians may also have been among the settlers.
Like all of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary (German-West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Bándoly be used.
After the end of the First World War, after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The municipality has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).
In 1971, the communities of Allersdorf im Burgenland, Mönchmeierhof, Podgoria, Podler, Rauhriegel-Allersgraben, Rumpersdorf and Zuberbach were merged with Weiden bei Rechnitz.
Settlement of the Wallachians
The defeat of the Croats caused by the Turks on the Krbava field in 1493 triggered a great migratory movement. After the defeat, the Croats are exposed to raids and looting by the Turks, which triggers Croatian emigration to western Hungary and Lower Austria. The landlords resident there are striving for Croatian settlements, as there is a great shortage of labor, which makes it impossible to manage the goods.
In addition to the farmers, Croatian shepherds (German: "Wallachians", Croatian: "Vlahi") also make their way north. Their settlement in our area began around the year 1540, partly under the rule of "Rechnitz - Schlaining" in Mönchmeierhof, Rauhriegel, Allersdorf, Allersgraben, Podler, Althodis, and partly under the rule of Rotenturm: Rumpersdorf, Podgoria, Unterpodgoria, Weiden bei Rechnitz, Parapatitschberg, Stefanshof, Spitzzicken. The Wallachians lived from sparse agriculture and cattle breeding. The Wallachians held a special position with the landlords, the so-called "Wallachian Freedoms", that is, extensive exemption from taxes to the landlord and from robot service. The Wallachians had these special rights confirmed again and again by their manorial rule. However, they were also faced with duties such as guard duty, police service and assistance with repair work on the manor houses.
Weiden bei Rechnitz is the center of the political community. The foundation was made by the Wallachian settlement between 1517 and 1547. The special rights granted to the Weidner Wallachians are confirmed in a document from 1549 by Peter II. Erdöly.
