The type 170 is a type of container ship from the Sietas shipyard in Hamburg-Neuenfelde . From 2001 to 2007 twelve units of this series were built: four ships of the basic type 170, two of the subtype 170a and six of the subtype 170b.

history

The contract shipping company Marlow Navigation Company Limited from Limassol ( Cyprus ) ordered the first three ships in the series to be chartered out to the Danish Mærsk Line . The owners of the new buildings with the names Aquarius , Amadeus I and Starlight were three holding companies that the Cypriot shipping company had previously founded. The fourth ship of the basic type 170, which was originally to be named Pioneer Condor , was ordered by Quadrant Bereederungs GmbH from Hamburg . Shortly after the contract was awarded, the Hamburg company sold this building contract to Marlow Navigation, which gave the ship the name Landstar . The lead ship Aquarius ran on 11 October 2001 from the pile and was on 15 December 2001 with the name Maersk Vancouver delivered. The three other units came into operation in 2002 with the names Maersk Valetta , Maersk Vigo and Maersk Venice . Mærsk Line initially used all four ships in liner service between Algeciras ( Spain ) and Santos ( Brazil ), although they also called at the Brazilian ports of Vitória , Paranaguá and Itajaí as scheduled. In 2004, the Moroccan International Maritime Transport Casablanca bought the four ships and designated the German branch of V.Ships as the new contract shipping company . The charters on Mærsk Line remained unaffected and continued for a long time. In January 2013, Maersk Venice was acquired by Serpens Shipping Corporation, a Cypriot subsidiary of Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), and was named MSC Amy . Her three sister ships were after the Maersk chartering from mid-July 2013, a total of 41 crew members north of Wangerooge weeks on the roads . When the power supply on board the Maersk Valetta threatened to fail due to a lack of fuel, the German emergency command took the three ships to Wilhelmshaven at the end of August 2013 , where they were chained the following month due to outstanding wage claims . The three trailers were sold to the British company Borealis Martime on January 31, 2014. They were then named Bomar Vanquish , Bomar Valor and Bomar Victory .

The two ships of the subtype 170a were ordered as Palomar and Pyxis by the Marlow Navigation Company Limited. They were also planned to be chartered out to Mærsk Line. The first ship was delivered on August 24, 2004 as Maersk Victoria and shortly afterwards it was acquired by Peter Döhle Schiffahrts-KG from Hamburg. At the same time, Reederei Döhle also bought the construction contract for the second ship, which was delivered on October 27, 2004 with the name Maersk Vera Cruz . The two units initially ran jointly in liner service between South Africa and Brazil . The Maersk Victoria was then deployed from Manzanillo ( Panama ) on trips through the Panama Canal to the US west coast . From July 25, 2008, she operated in feeder traffic between Balboa (Panama) and Esmeraldas (Ecuador) . After the Maersk charter ended, the ships were renamed Victoria and Vera D in August and November 2009, respectively .

The six built units of the sub-type 170b had originally been ordered by the shipping company Peter Döhle, which then sold two construction contracts to Transeste Schiffahrt GmbH. The first ship, the Viona was before completion of shipping company Döhle to the Møller group belonging Safmarine chartered and on 10 March 2006 as Safmarine Mbashe delivered. The Helle Ritscher and the Jonny Ritscher , whose construction contracts Transeste Schiffahrt had acquired, started up in the same year as DAL East London for the Hamburg shipping company DAL Deutsche Afrika-Linien and as CMA CGM Caribbean for the French shipping company CMA CGM . These three ships as well as the Violetta , which was delivered as MOL Drakensberg on March 1, 2007 , initially sailed together in the SAECS liner service between Europe and South Africa . Shipping company Döhle initially used the Valdivia , which was delivered on December 8, 2006, and the Valentina , which was delivered on June 6, 2007 , for Hapag-Lloyd between Europe and Montreal ( Canada ).

Victoria Incident

On March 15, 2011, the Victoria was stopped by Israeli special forces around 200 kilometers off the Israeli coast and, after an inspection of the cargo, diverted to the port of Ashdod (Israel). The ship, managed by Peter Döhle Schiffahrts-KG, was on its way from Mersin ( Turkey ) to Alexandria ( Egypt ) and had previously called at the Syrian port city of Latakia . 39 incorrectly declared containers had been loaded there, containing, among other things, 2,500  mortar shells , two rocket launchers and six anti-ship missiles of the Nasr type (C-704). The armaments coming from Iran were supposed to be smuggled into the Gaza Strip via Egypt . A similar weapon was found on board the Francop in 2009, which was also made at Sietas.

The ships, which are built in sections , are around 178.50 meters long and 27.60 meters wide. The hulls of the subtypes 170a and 170b were made at the Mangalia shipyard in Romania and were towed to Hamburg as hulls . The deckhouses of the subtype 170b were built by the Sietas shipyard in Poland . All units in the series have three NMF loading cranes each with a maximum load capacity of 45 t. The four box-shaped holds have a volume of 30,025 m³ and are equipped with hydraulic folding hatch covers .

The vessels of the basic type 170 and the sub-type 170a are of a 16,980  kW paid six-cylinder two-stroke diesel engine of the type MAN-B & W 6L70MC C-driven, responsive to a fixed propeller acts. The sub-type 170b has a modified diesel engine of the type MAN-B & W 6L70MC-E with the same output. An electrically powered bow thruster with 900 kW power and an electrically powered stern thruster with 700 kW power are available for berthing and casting off maneuvers . There are four diesel generators on board to generate electricity. An emergency generator was also installed.

Type 170

The four ships of the basic type 170 have reinforced hulls and are designed for ice thicknesses of up to 80 centimeters ( ice class E3). Their carrying capacity is around 22,300  dwt . You can stow up to 1683  20-foot standard containers (TEU) or alternatively 792 40-foot standard containers (FEU) plus 82 TEU. With an average weight of 14 t per container, a maximum of 1305 TEU could be loaded for reasons of stability. There are connections for 400 refrigerated containers on board .

Type 170a

The sub-type 170a is designed for cruising in ice-free waters or for very light ice conditions. The two ships built have a load capacity of around 22,400 dwt and can stow a maximum of 1678 TEU. Its other capacities correspond to those of the basic type 170. There are connections for 233 refrigerated containers on board.

Type 170b

The sub-type 170b, like the basic type 170, has a reinforced hull and was classified for ice class E3. Its superstructures have an additional deck. The higher position of the bridge means that six instead of five layers of containers can be stowed on the upper deck . The carrying capacity of the six ships built varies slightly and is around 22,250 dwt. Their maximum container capacity is 1853 TEU or, alternatively, 892 FEU. With a homogeneous load with 14 t heavy containers, a maximum of 1285 TEU may be stowed for reasons of stability. There are connections for 375 refrigerated containers on board.
