Wallau im Taunus is a district of Hofheim am Taunus in the Main-Taunus district in southern Hesse . The place is about ten kilometers southwest of the Hofheim city center and lies on Hofheim's western border.
Geographical location
Wallau is located in the Main-Taunus foreland on the border to the Vordertaunus in the valley of the Wickerbach , which flows through the middle of the village. It is located in the immediate vicinity of the districts of Breckenheim , Nordenstadt and Delkenheim in the Hessian state capital Wiesbaden , which surround the location from the north, west and south.
The Wallau district is intersected in the east by the federal highway 3 and in the south by the federal highway 66 , which are linked by the Wiesbadener Kreuz in the immediate vicinity . These two important and busy federal highways in the immediate vicinity of the locality represent an ecological and urban planning impairment, but through the connection points Wallau and Diedenbergen of the A 66 the place became a coveted industrial location because it is conveniently located. Without the connection to the autobahn, the Wallau-Ost industrial area to the east of the A3 would not have developed so well from the 1970s onwards that, with its 500,000 square meters, it exceeds the area of the Wallau residential areas.
The railway tunnels Wandersmann Süd (795 m) and Wandersmann Nord (1.1 km) also run in the southeast of the district . After completion of this construction project, the eastern bypass could be implemented to relieve traffic within the town. It leads traffic from the Wallau junction in the south around the town center, under the A 3 and over the high-speed Cologne – Rhine / Main line to the industrial area there and towards Diedenbergen, Langenhain and Breckenheim.
history
First mentioned in a document by King Otto I in a deed of donation from the year 950 , the place is referred to as Wanaloha (Wana = water, Loha = forest). Wanaloha was sold and pledged, it changed hands until it finally became the cultural, economic and political center of the country under Hessian rule. In 1563 a Latin school was built and from 1572 a weekly market took place.
Wallau suffered badly from the Thirty Years' War , great fires and the plague.
From 1643 to 1817 Wallau was the official place of the Protestant country . The Jewish cemetery was also built at this time .
The Wallauers lived in hardship and misery again during the French Revolution (1789 to 1799), during further wars, due to robber gangs and bad harvests. Nevertheless, over generations, people rebuilt their houses, their church, the town hall, stables and barns over and over again. Nor did they put up with everything from the authorities. In 1825, for example, the community fathers refused to approve a tax increase (it was cut in half as a result of the protest). The sheep fight in 1849, however, was lost.
After 1945, the rapid development of the Rhine-Main area also had an impact on Wallau. Agriculture and handicrafts receded more and more as the basis of life, the place developed into a modern residential community with a good infrastructure. In 1950, Wallau had 1480 inhabitants, in 1977 it was 3759, and in 2000 it was 4,500.
As part of the regional reform in Hesse , Wallau was incorporated into the city of Hofheim am Taunus on January 1, 1977 , after over 95% of the residents had voted in favor in 1974. The draft law, which originally provided for a connection to Wiesbaden, was then changed accordingly.
