Willi Baumeister (1981)

Willi Baumeister (born August 26, 1927 in Falkenberg , Lower Bavaria , † March 1, 1997 in Bad Griesbach , Lower Bavaria) was a German sculptor . Willi Baumeister was a representative of contemporary modern art in Germany. His work is characterized by a large number of works in the fields of art in buildings , art in public spaces and church art.

Life

Willi Baumeister was born in Falkenberg / Lower Bavaria in 1927 as the oldest of six siblings. From 1942 to 1944 he trained as a blacksmith in Augsburg . Between 1944 and 1945 he was trained as a glider pilot and pilot. In April 1945 (aged 18 years), he was a paratrooper to Holland in the war sent and seriously wounded. He spent four months in the hospital and then in captivity.

From 1946 to 1948 he retrained as a locksmith and worked from 1948 to 1953 in various handicraft businesses.

He never lost sight of his actual goal - art - and looked for a way to combine his manual skills with a degree. From 1955 to 1962 he studied at the then arts and crafts school in Bern (today Bern University of the Arts (HKB)) and worked in an arts and crafts company. In 1963 he returned to Bavaria and worked as a freelance artist until his death in 1997 .

Work (excerpt)

Willi Baumeister represented the thesis coined by Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius that art and craft cannot be separated from one another and that artists are “an enhancement of craft”.

He worked with a wide variety of materials such as B. copper , bronze , stone and glass and always implemented his design ideas using his own manual skills.
