Willian (born August 9, 1988 in Ribeirão Preto ; full name Willian Borges da Silva ) is a Brazilian football player who is under contract with Arsenal .
Club career
Willian began his professional career in 2006 at the Brazilian club Corinthians São Paulo , in whose youth teams he played until 2005. He quickly became the star of the team and wore the number 10 that Márcio Amoroso had previously worn. In August 2007 he was signed by Shakhtar Donetsk for 14 million euros . In his first season he won the double with this club: In the Premjer-Liha , they prevailed with just three points ahead of record champions Dynamo Kiev and in the cup final they beat this team 2-0. In the 2008/09 season Donetsk won the final of the UEFA Cup with 2-1 aet against Werder Bremen . He won the Ukrainian championship again with Donetsk in 2010, 2011 and 2012, and the Ukrainian Football Cup in 2011 and 2012.
On January 31, 2013, Willian moved to Anzhi Makhachkala for 35 million euros . The Russian club was financed by the billionaire Suleiman Kerimov . There it was announced at the beginning of August 2013 that the player budget would be significantly reduced. Together with his teammate Samuel Eto'o , Willian moved to the Premier League for Chelsea shortly before the end of the transfer window . The Brazilian signed a five-year contract at Stamford Bridge until June 30, 2018. Under coach José Mourinho , he made his way into the starting line-up and was used variably on the wing and in the attacking midfield. In his second year at Chelsea, Willian and his team won the league cup and the championship in 2015 . In the following season his club could not repeat the success and only reached tenth place in the table. At the time, this was the record for the worst performance of a reigning champions in the Premier League. From December 2015, Willian was still part of the starting line-up under interim coach Guus Hiddink and was player of the year at Chelsea despite the weak season. In the 2016/17 season , the club regained its old strength and won the championship with a lack of international play and under the new coach Antonio Conte . Willian has been ousted on the right wing by Victor Moses since that season and was used more often as an offensive, variable substitute. Willian left the club in early August 2020.
For the 2020/21 season Willian moved to Arsenal on a free transfer .
National team
Willian was part of the Brazilian U-20 national team , which won the U-20 South America Championship in 2007 and took part in the Junior World Cup in Canada.
In 2011 he was nominated for two friendlies for the Brazilian national team under Mano Menezes . At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Willian was in the Seleção squad and finished fourth with her. In the historic 1: 7 defeat in the semi-finals against Germany, he came on for Fred in the 69th minute . For the Copa America 2019 , Willian was nominated as a substitute for the injured Neymar . With the team he was able to win the title. He was substituted on in four games (one goal).
