Herent is a Belgian municipality in the province of Flemish Brabant . It is the neighboring city of the provincial capital Leuven and includes the sub-municipalities Herent, Veltem-Beisem and Winksele.

history

Herent's beginnings can be traced back to the 9th century. In the 13th century Herent already existed as a "community" with its own lay judges and community seal. Administratively, Herent depended on the Duchy of Brabant .

In 1658 the Spanish King Philip IV of Spain donated the community to René van Mol. Herent finally passed to the Barons van Spangen through inheritance. In 1687 they were given the right by King Charles II of Spain to combine the name "van Spangen" with that of the municipality, which remained so until the French Revolution .

The inhabitants of Herent meanwhile suffered from the armed conflicts of the time. Attacks on the city of Leuven were mostly carried out from Herent. Only after the Peace of Utrecht in 1713 did calm come to the region.

Until 1860, Herent was shaped almost exclusively by agriculture . Industrialization began in the second half of the 19th century . Many residents also began to commute to Leuven, Brussels or Zaventem for professional reasons . In 1866 the community received a train station on the Brussels – Liège line .

On January 1, 1977, the sub-communities Veltem-Beisem, Winksele and Herent were combined to form the community of Herent. Wijgmaal, which until then had also belonged to Herent, was added to the city of Leuven.
