Mountain running world championships

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The World Mountain Running Championships ( World Mountain Running Championships, and 2008 World Mountain Running Trophy ) are international competitions in mountain running , by the since 1985 World Mountain Running Association are aligned (WMRA). In even years uphill stretches are completed, in uneven uphill-downhill courses, each contrary to the European championships. In 2009 the competitions were officially upgraded to world championships by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).

The championships each consist of four races: two in the adult category for men and women and two in the junior category for male and female youths (between 16 and 19 years old). There is also a team ranking for the participating nations in all categories. New Zealander Jonathan Wyatt is the record world champion for men with 6 titles. The most successful lady is also six-time world champion Andrea Mayr from Austria.

In 2001 the World Masters Mountain Running Championships were introduced. These are the official mountain running world championships for senior citizens, age groups from W35 / M35 to W75 / M75. According to the WMRA regulations, the maximum age of participants is limited to 79 years.

Since 2004 there have also been World Long Distance Mountain Running Championships , i.e. mountain running long distance world championships, in which almost marathon distances with an altitude difference of around 1,600 to 2,000 meters have to be mastered.

history

Although the event claims to be World Championships, the first Mountain Running World Championships in 1985 featured only European runners. That changed the next year when four runners from Morocco and one from Algeria took part. From 1985 to 1992 there was also a short-distance competition for men, in which the Austrian musician, cabaret artist and painter Alf Poier took part in 1988 .

The countries of the Eastern Bloc stayed away from the mountain running world championships, with the exception of Hungary , which sent a runner to the world championships on September 16, 1989. After the collapse of the Eastern Bloc, athletes from the Soviet Union , the GDR , Czechoslovakia , Poland and Bulgaria competed for the first time at the World Championships on September 15, 1990 .

The junior women competition took place for the first time in 1992. After that there was a four-year hiatus until it took place for the second time in 1997 and has been an integral part of the World Championships ever since.

Until 2008, the runners from England , Scotland , Wales and Northern Ireland competed separately. Together they have formed the United Kingdom team since 2009 .
