Yukinari Sugawara ( Japanese 菅原 由 勢 , Sugawara Yukinari ; born June 28, 2000 in Toyokawa ) is a Japanese football player who has been under contract with the Dutch honorary division AZ Alkmaar since July 2019 . He has been a Japanese U23 international since October 2019 and mostly plays the position of right full-back , but can also occupy the position of center- back .

Career

In Toyokawa born Sugawara comes from the youth department of Nagoya Grampus and became the game in 2018 promoted to the first team. On February 24, 2018 (1st matchday) he made his debut in the 3-2 away win against Gamba Osaka for the first division club . With this use, the 17 years, seven months and 27 days old central defender became the second youngest player in the J1 League since Junichi Inamoto in 1997. In the next league games he was used regularly. While Grampus failed to win 15 league games, Sugawara fell out of the starting line-up and was no longer considered for the rest of the season. He ended the 2017 season with 13 league appearances and also played six cup games. In the next season of 2019 he was not used in any league game until his move, but collected time in the J. League Cup in the center and full-back position.

On July 21, 2019, Yukinari Sugawara moved to the Dutch honorary division AZ Alkmaar for the entire 2019/20 season , who secured a purchase option for the young defensive man. He made his debut on July 25, 2019 in a 0-0 draw against BK Häcken in the second qualifying round for the 2019/20 UEFA Europa League when he came on for Stijn Wuytens in the 59th minute . At AZ he was planned from the start as a right full-back, where he would compete with the Norwegian Jonas Svensson and be built up as his future successor. On August 4, 2019 (1st matchday) he started the home game against Fortuna Sittard and scored the goal in the 84th minute of the game after preliminary work by Calvin Stengs to make it 4-0. In the league and group stage of the 2019/20 UEFA Europa League, he was a regular rotation player in the next few years, while he also made some appearances for the reserve team Jong AZ Alkmaar in the second-highest Dutch division . On February 23, 2020, the club announced that Sugawara will start a five-year contract with the Dutch on June 1, 2020. During this season he played 16 league games in which he scored two goals.

National team

In late 2015, Yukinari Sugawara made four caps for Japan's U15 national team . Since February 2017 he was then in action for the U17 . In October 2017 he took part with the selection at the 2017 U17 World Cup in India , where he was on the field in all three group games of the team. In the last sixteen they were eliminated on penalties against eventual world champions England . Sugawara used his attempt as the first Japanese shooter. He played a total of 12 international matches for the U17s, in which he scored a goal.

In October 2018, he took part in the U19 Asian Cup in Indonesia with the Japan U19 . At the tournament he played three of the five possible games and made it to the semi-finals with the team.

In March 2019 he was used for the first time in friendly matches with the U20 and nominated for the selection squad for the U20 World Cup 2019 in Poland . At the tournament he was used in all three group games and also in the 0-1 defeat in the round of 16 against the eventual runner-up South Korea he was on the field from the start.

He has been a Japanese U23 international since October 2019 .
