Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, based on the novel Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J. K. Rowling, will be the sixth film in the fantasy adventure Harry Potter films series. Production is in the principal photography stage. David Yates, the director of the fifth film, will return as director for this film. David Heyman, the film's producer, along with David Barron,[1] has said that Steve Kloves, though he didn't write the fifth movie, will return as screenwriter for this film.[2] Filming began on 17 September 2007 and is scheduled for a UK and U.S. release on 21 November 2008.[3][4]

Production

Development

Before David Yates was officially chosen to direct the film, many others had been offered the job, and previous directors had expressed an interest in returning.[3] Director of the first and second films Chris Columbus said he would return as director if, and only if, the actors he originally cast as the trio (Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson) remained.[5] Subsequent reports confirmed these three actors' returns, though Columbus made no comment before Yates was chosen.[1] Alfonso Cuarón, the director of the third film, Prisoner of Azkaban, has said he "would love to have the opportunity" to return.[6] Goblet of Fire director Mike Newell declined a spot to direct the fifth film, and was not approached for this one either.[7]

Terry Gilliam was Rowling's personal choice to direct Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. However, when asked whether he would consider directing a later film, Gilliam said, "Warner Bros. had their chance the first time around, and they blew it."[8] Matthew Vaughn and James McTeigue had reportedly been approached as well.[9] M. Night Shyamalan was also asked at one point, but declined the position,[9] stating that he would like to try his own hand at writing an adaptation of a book before attempting to take on Harry Potter.[10] Access Hollywood reported that Michael Hoffman was in talks to direct,[11] though the rumour was quickly denied.[12]

On 13 November, WB announced that nobody was in negotiations to direct.[13] It had been repeatedly reported that around Christmas 2006, Warner Bros. would make a decision regarding the director,[9][11] but not until May 2007 was Yates announced as the director. Yates is the second director, after Columbus, to direct not only two films in the series, but both consecutively.[14] Yates has retained composer Nicholas Hooper, costume designer Jany Temime and visual effects supervisor Tim Burke from the fifth film.[15][16][17] Since February 2007, Stuart Craig, the production designer of the first five films as well, has been designing sets, including the cave, and the astronomy tower, where the climax of the film takes place.[18] Bruno Delbonnel has been hired as the film's cinematographer, with him beginning principal photography on September 24 2007.[16]

Yates and Heyman have noted that some of the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows may influence the script of the film,[19] and that there will not be as many memories in the film as in the book. Yates noted: "We're making a decision right now to compress those a wee bit, but we've still got some really cool ones."[20]

Filming

Filming began on 17 September 2007, with one week of rehearsals, and is scheduled to last through May 2008.[4][21] Some sources have stated that filming may move from the UK, where all of the previous five films have been shot. This is North Scotland reported filming will take place in New Zealand, due to the "more agreeable economy and climate" and lack of Scottish funding.[22] The Sunday Business Post in Ireland has noted that the film's producers and WB executives have been scouting there, specifically Leinster and Munster because they "believe they have now exhausted possible locations in Britain." They are "particularly keen on Ireland, as the landscape is similar to Britain and will appear similar to the settings of the previous films."[23] The crew also scouted around Cape Wrath in Scotland, for use in the cave scene.[24] A series of night scenes featuring the principal characters will be filmed in the village of Lacock and the cloisters at Lacock Abbey in October 2007 for four days.[25]

Cast

Confirmed

Additionally, two 11-year-old children, Taylor Triphook and Katie Head, who have been noted to be redheads, will play twins in the film, not culled from the novel. Heyman confirmed this in an interview on the red carpet at the U.S. premiere of Order of the Phoenix.[35]

On 1 July 2007, girls trying out for the part of Lavender Brown read from a scene with Madam Pomfrey, Hermione, and Ron.[36] It is unknown if Gemma Jones, who played Madam Pomfrey in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets will return.

At the U.S. premiere of Order of the Phoenix, Yates confirmed that Young Tom Riddle had been cast: "I've found a really interesting kid to play Riddle. I can't tell you who it is yet – it's early days."[20]

Expressed interest in returning

The following actors have publicly expressed interest in reprising their roles; however, no announcements have been made regarding them.

Padma Patil Afshan Azad [37]
Parvati Patil Shefali Chowdhury [37]

Casting

Early auditions took place in England in April 2007, though reports would not state which role the audition was for. One actor who auditioned for the role was Icelandic Jón Páll Eyjólfsson, who went to school with screenwriter Steve Kloves.[43] An open casting call was held in July 2007 for the role of Tom Riddle where the applicants read from a scene involving Riddle trying to persuade Horace Slughorn to explain what Horcruxes were.[44] Though Christian Coulson played Riddle in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), and expressed interest in returning,[45] Yates has commented that Coulson is too old, nearing 30, to be playing the role.[46] In the October 2007 issue of Teen Vogue, young actor Jamie Campbell Bower, who will appear in the upcoming The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007), noted that he had his "fingers crossed" he would be cast as a young Riddle.[47]

An open casting call was held on 1 July 2007 for Harry's classmate Lavender Brown, with whom Ron has a relationship. Over 7,000 girls turned out for the role audition and read from the script in a scene with Madam Pomfrey, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley.[36] Yates has said that he plans to bring Rupert Grint to read certain lines and kiss with the top five choices for Lavender, to see which pairing has the best chemistry.[46] In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), Jennifer Smith had a cameo role as Lavender.

Official casting news was scarce even as filming began.[47] It has been reported that Jack Davenport, Stephen Rea, and Peter Rnic are in negotiations for unspecified roles.[48] On 24 July 2007, The Courier-Mail reported that Naomi Watts had been cast as Narcissa Malfoy, with Stuart Townsend and Joseph Fiennes, the younger brother of Ralph Fiennes (Lord Voldemort), also being cast.[49] The next day, representatives of Watts, Townsend and Fiennes denied the reports.[50]

Bill Nighy has expressed an interest in appearing in the film. Friends with director David Yates, he joked with him "that maybe now I wouldn't be the only actor in England who hadn't been in Harry Potter."[51] Yates has said that if the Minister for Magic, Rufus Scrimgeour, makes it to the final screenplay that Nighy will be his first choice for the role.[52]

Marketing

The special edition two-disc DVD for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix will include a "sneak peek" of the film.[53]

Awards

Before its release, Half-Blood Prince won the 2007 Movies.com award for film you "Can't Wait For".[54]
