Johannes Wijnandus (Johan) Remkes (born in Oosterbroek (Groningen) on 15 June 1951) became a member of the Second Chamber of the Dutch parliament in 1993, for the conservative liberal party VVD. From 1998 to 2002 he was a State Secretary in the Second cabinet of Wim Kok. In 2002 he became Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Internal Affairs in the First Balkenende cabinet. Between 27 May 2003 he fulfilled this role in the second and third Balkenende cabinet and 22 February 2007.
