The 1st league  2001/02highest Polish   men's soccer division  . The season started on July 21, 2001 and ended on May 1, 2002. 
mode The 16 clubs played in two groups of eight teams each. The season was conducted in a two-tier format. In the preliminary round, each team competed against each other twice; once at home and once away.
At the end of this phase, the four best clubs qualified for the championship round. Half of the points from the preliminary round were taken over.
The clubs in places 5 to 8 of the preliminary round then played in the relegation round. Here, too, half of the points from the preliminary round were taken over. The last two clubs were relegated directly. The third and fourth from bottom had to go into relegation.
