13 is the 19th and final studio album by the British heavy metal band Black Sabbath . It was released in Europe on June 7, 2013 on Vertigo Records , in the USA and Canada on June 11, 2013 on Republic Records and in the rest of the world on June 10, 2013 on Vertigo. 13 is the band's first and last studio album since 1995 ( Forbidden ) . It is also the first Black Sabbath studio album since Never Say Die! (1978), on which Ozzy Osbourne sings and is involved in the songwriting. The album was produced by Rick Rubin .

prehistory

After the release of Forbidden , Tony Iommi ended the collaboration with all the musicians involved to tour with Ozzy Osbourne and Geezer Butler on the 1997 Ozzfest tour in 1997. Here sat Mike Bordin on drums. A little later, the original drummer Bill Ward returned to the band and Black Sabbath played for the first time since 1979 with the original line-up. The live album Reunion emerged from these concerts and was released a year later. It also contained studio recordings of two new songs, Selling My Soul and Psycho Man , both written by Osbourne and Iommi. However, due to a heart attack by Bill Ward, a full album was not made, although this was intended.

This was followed by a creative break without concerts until 2005. There was no talk of a new album during this time. After a compilation called The Dio Years appeared in 2007 , which included the most famous songs from the time Ronnie James Dio sang, Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice played a few concerts as Heaven and Hell . This project continued and in 2009 the album The Devil You Know was released . However, Dio died in 2010 after a short illness of stomach cancer , whereupon speculations arose about a final reunification.

On August 16, 2011, it was rumored that the original cast had returned for a reunion. Although Tony Iommi denied this on his website, he made a statement a day later that did not rule out a reunification one hundred percent. Important news was announced for November 11, 2011, which was then released in the form of a video message on YouTube : The original line-up had kept silent about their reunion for a long time and were planning a new studio album and a world tour for 2012.

At the beginning of 2012, however, Tony Iommi's cancer became known, after which the tour was postponed for the time being. In order not to disappoint the fans, Ozzy & Friends (including Zakk Wylde and Slash ) should perform instead . A Black Sabbath set was announced for the concerts, at which Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler was also to play. In February 2012, drummer Bill Ward announced his exit. He published a statement on the reasons on his homepage. Nevertheless, three concerts took place in 2012: a concert in the hometown of Birmingham on May 19th, one at the Download Festival in Donington Park , the third in the USA at Lollapalooza . Tommy Clufetos was on drums at these gigs . Then the band went to the studio.

The album

In January 2013 the album was terminated to June 2013. It has the simple title 13 . Also known the band announced that the album and on the accompanying tour Brad Wilk of Rage Against the Machine 's drummer.

On April 5, 2013, the album cover was shown in advance. It is simply designed as a burning 13 in nature. Parts of the song God Is Dead? played.

At the end of October 2015, the band announced that there would be no new album, which makes 13 Black Sabbath's last studio album.

reception

David Rybol from undergrounded.de rates the album as "a strong album, which many Ozzy, Tony and Geezer would certainly not have expected" and ranked 13 "among the strong metal albums of 2013" (rating 8.0 out of 10 Points). In Allmusic , the album was also well received and rated 4.5 of 5.

13 was voted 11th among the best albums of 2013 by the editors of the German music magazine Visions .
