The ARD morning magazine live from IFA in Berlin 2005

The ARD morning magazine is a morning news and information program produced by WDR for Das Erste every two weeks . The program has existed since 1992 and is broadcast live as one of the two public morning magazines alternating with the ZDF morning magazine.

Broadcast date

The program initially ran from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. Since August 28, 1995, breakfast television has started at 5:30 a.m. Short messages from the respective broadcaster will follow immediately at 9:00 a.m.

In 2009, the ARD broadcast the morning magazine mainly in the even calendar weeks , the ZDF in the odd weeks. Only in July, ARD and ZDF exceptionally broadcast two weeks each “en bloc”. Due to a 53rd week in 2009, there was a change in rhythm in 2010, which meant that the odd weeks were broadcast. Another change took place in 2016, since then the ARD morning magazine has been broadcasting again in the even weeks. The programs run Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. In addition, for very important events , the ARD morning magazine also produces unscheduled extensions of the regular broadcast or special issues on weekends, e.g. B. on the occasion of the NATO summit in Strasbourg in spring 2009 or after the 2009 federal election . Both sister programs run on both the first and ZDF. The ARD morning magazine is also broadcast in the digital ARD offer tagesschau24 .

Program content

The program focuses on reporting on current topics from politics, society, culture and sport. The editorial team of the ARD morning magazine draws on the national and global network of ARD correspondents and has its own capital correspondent, Marion von Haaren , who regularly conducts political interviews from the ARD capital studio in Berlin. The program is supplemented every full and half hour by short editions of the Tagesschau , which is produced by ARD-aktuell at the NDR in Hamburg. A sports block is located at the end of half an hour of the morning magazine before the news , the weather forecast , which is also half-hourly, runs after the news.

The ARD morning magazine also offers other regular topic blocks:

  • live & on the go (detailed daily live reporting on a wide variety of topics from society, politics, research and economy, mostly in Germany, from time to time from abroad)
  • Service (including chat) (daily expert interviews on advisory topics from all areas on various topics. Here viewers can also ask questions during the broadcast and take part in an Internet chat)
  • Culture tip (a weekly series of films in which celebrities give their recommendations for books, theater, film, exhibitions and other cultural events)
  • Cinema tip (every Thursday, in case of a public holiday the previous Wednesday)
  • Book tip (once a month on Fridays, in the case of a public holiday on the previous Thursday)
  • Sports block (current sports coverage , see above)
  • Weather forecast ( weather review and forecast, see above)

history

Emergence

This logo was used before the 2017 rebranding.

The ARD morning magazine first went on air on July 13, 1992. Until then, there were only early programs from Sat.1 and RTL since the late 1980s. The ARD's first early information programs had previously existed selectively during the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles for four weeks and during the Second Gulf War for a few months. The decisive factor in the decision by ARD and ZDF to set up regular early formats was the good audience feedback for the special programs about the Gulf War. At that time, a provisional breakfast television started on the first, which was launched by the ARD-aktuell Hamburg editorial team (Tagesschau, Tagesthemen ) within a few days and reported monothematic about the war. After four weeks, the WDR replaced the ARD-aktuell team with a special editorial team and broadcast an early broadcast for another three months, which in addition to information about the Gulf War also contained other information elements.

For economic reasons, ARD and ZDF agreed to alternate weekly with in-house-produced formats in the morning from July 1992, as had already proven itself with the cooperation with the Mittagsmagazin . The WDR took over the establishment of the editorial office in Cologne under the direction of Johannes Kaul and Dieter Saldecki . At the same time, the ZDF set up its editorial office in Berlin . ARD and ZDF took over the market leadership in the morning from scratch; they currently have an average of around 22% market share.

Broadcast concept

The ARD-Morgenmagazin took care of the live reporting from the very beginning and set standards here. This applies both to the style of fast, daily live performances and to background live reports from Germany and all over the world. In late autumn 1999 , the ARD morning magazine was the first to broadcast live reports from the middle of the rainforest in Panama with a portable satellite unit . Another special feature was the world's first live broadcast from the Arctic , which came about in June 2001 using a helicopter and several radio links. In the summer of 2007, the ARD morning magazine (and thus ARD as the first western broadcaster ever) managed to broadcast live from Beijing and the surrounding area for a whole week .

The ARD morning magazine has been broadcast in 16: 9 widescreen format since October 2006 .

editorial staff

The editorial team of the ARD morning magazine belongs to the WDR and, from an organizational point of view, is a separate WDR program group due to its size. Martin Hövel is the leader. Permanent and freelance employees work together in the Cologne editorial team. In addition, the ARD-aktuell domestic editorial offices and the ARD foreign studios contribute to the ARD morning magazine . Technicians, cameramen, editors, graphic designers and other specialists from the WDR are still working to produce the daily three and a half hour program.

Studio

The backdrops for the ARD morning magazine were up until May 28, 2010 in Studio C of the WDR in Cologne. From June 7, 2010 to September 30, 2017, the broadcast was from Studio B. As a result of the change, some new elements have also been added to the studio: The weather map is now displayed on a large screen and can be controlled manually by the moderator. Also new was a pane of glass on which the current topics are displayed. It works like a heads-up display : the images were projected onto the pane with the help of a video projector and made visible to the camera through an inserted film. The ARD morning magazine shared the studio with the sports show .

The ARD morning magazine has been broadcast from another studio since October 9, 2017, and the design has been completely redesigned. The studio still has a touchscreen weather map and now has five wide screens spread across the studio. The typical red bars of the WDR (on-air design elements) are recognizable, since the studio is also used for other WDR programs such as u. a. Markt (WDR) , Hier und heute , Frau tv , but also for the ARD broadcast Monitor (television magazine) .

Former external contributors

Until 2008, Hademar Bankhofer appeared regularly on the show as a “health expert”. On July 24, 2008, the WDR terminated its cooperation with him because he had concealed an existing consulting contract with the Klosterfrau Healthcare Group and responded contradictingly to inquiries.

Others
