AVP tour
The AVP Tour is the national tournament series of the United States in volleyball . It is organized by the Association of Volleyball Professionals .
mode
The AVP Pro Tour consists of a different number of tournaments each year. There have been two categories since 2017. The higher value tournaments belong to the Gold Series with more prize money and ranking points to be won. The other tournaments are held as open. In 2020, due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, the AVP Champions Cup Series with three tournaments was held as a replacement.
A special feature compared to other beach volleyball competitions is the “point freeze” rule introduced in 2017. At match point you can only score points when you serve, which means that the usual rally point system with one point after each rally is overridden.

history
After the Association of Volleyball Professionals was founded in 1983, the players went on strike at an unofficial World Cup in 1984 in Redondo Beach . At the end of April 1984 the first tournament of the new AVP Tour was held. The first tour consisted of twenty tournaments; However, women only competed in two of these tournaments. In 1985 there were seventeen tournaments and in the following years more than twenty. 1986 saw the first television broadcasts. In 1988, when the Miller Brewing Company became a sponsor , the prize money rose to $ 4.5 million. Charles Kiraly and his partner Kent Steffes shaped the tournament series with their successes in the following years. In 1991 Kiraly also won the first edition of the "King of the Beach" tournament that he initiated, in which the players compete with changing partners. In 1993 and 1994 women took part in sixteen and fourteen tournaments, respectively, after they had rarely or never played before. In 1996 Kiraly / Steffens not only achieved record values in the AVP Tour, but also won the first Olympic beach volleyball tournament .
In 1997 the AVP got into financial difficulties, which is why the prize money at the AVP Tour 1998 fell significantly due to a lack of sponsorship money. The newly founded organization Major League Volleyball then took over the organization of the AVP Tour, which comprised twelve tournaments in 1999 and 2000. In 2001, after some restructuring, the players were united on an equal footing in the AVP. Since the AVP Tour 2002 all tournaments have been held for men and women. The number of tournaments gradually increased from seven events in 2002 to 18 tournaments in the 2007 Tour. In these years Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor , who managed a season without defeat in 2003, became the dominant duo among the women. In January and February 2007 there was the “Hot Winter Nights”, the first indoor tournament series for beach volleyball players.
In August 2010, the AVP had to file for bankruptcy and broke off the current tour. The organization then changed hands several times. In 2011 there was one tournament, in 2012 there were two tournaments. The National Volley League (NVL) was temporarily created as competition. In 2013 a series of tournaments took place for the first time under the direction of Donald Sun. As in the next three years, it comprised seven tournaments. From 2017 to 2019 there were eight tournaments each, divided into Gold Series and Open tournaments.
media
The television broadcasts also contribute to the success of the AVP Tour. The first pictures were in 1986 at ABC . In 1991 NBC broadcast live from a tournament for the first time at the tournament in Milwaukee . In the following years the broadcast times were extended. Since 2018, all players can also be seen live and on-demand on the streaming service Amazon Prime Video .
