The Alfa Romeo 164 is an upper middle class car of the Italian automobile brand Alfa Romeo , which was manufactured from September 1987 to June 1997, with deliveries continuing until 1998.

General

Although Alfa Romeo was still a state-owned company at the time, the 164 was developed together with the Saab 9000 , Lancia Thema and the Fiat Croma (Tipo 4 project). He shares the floor pan with them . The design of the fully galvanized body of the 164 comes from Pininfarina . The 164 was the first larger Alfa Romeo to have front-wheel drive .

The Alfa Romeo Scighera , a prototype from 1997 , is derived from the Alfa Romeo 164 .

history

Master model

Alfa Romeo presented its model 164 at the IAA Frankfurt in September 1987. The following versions were available:

  • T.SPARK: powered by a two-liter four-cylinder with double ignition , each with and without a catalytic converter;
  • 3.0 V6: with a three-liter V6 engine ("Arese V6"), which was taken over from the Alfa 6 published in spring 1979, with and without a catalytic converter;
  • TD ( only for some markets - especially the Italian home market ): with 2.5-liter four-cylinder diesel engine with valve drive via spur gears and overhead camshaft, from VM Motori . When it was launched on the Italian market in 1987, the 164 TD was the fastest diesel car in the world with a top speed of 200 km / h;
  • From March 1988 (in Italy): Turbo ( only for some markets - especially the Italian home market ): with a two-liter turbo four-cylinder with overboost from Fiat / Lancia; this version was only produced in 1988;

The official delivery of the 164 in Germany did not begin until September 1988. Alfa Romeo and the parent company Fiat wanted to put an end to all teething problems of the new model and bring the quality to an appropriate level. After all, the Alfa 164 should ensure the survival of the Alfa Romeo automobile brand for the future.

All Alfa 164s brought their power to the road via a 5-speed manual transmission via the front wheels. From 1989 Alfa Romeo also offered the 164 3.0 V6 with a 4-speed automatic transmission from ZF .

Maquilage 90

In July 1990, Alfa Romeo revised the 164 noticeably for the first time.

Since the original version was heavily criticized because of its strong drive influences in the steering and because of the poor straight-line stability when accelerating, the greatest change was made there. The entire drive block consisting of the engine and transmission was installed three centimeters lower in the vehicle. As a result, the cardan shafts from the gearbox to the wheel hubs ran in a straight line and no longer kinked as before. Furthermore, significantly fewer disruptive forces built up under load, which significantly improved driving behavior. The drive influences were still noticeable, but were now within the usual market framework. In addition, some controls in the interior have been revised. In addition, Alfa has improved the connectors for cable connections. The previously partially galvanized body was fully galvanized. This first revised model is called Maquilage 90 (MQ90). Many of these changes came not least because of the planned introduction of the 164 on the US market.

In September 1990, the 164 Quadrifoglio Verde (QV) was also introduced as the top model with a 3.0 V6 increased to 147 kW (200 PS).

In March 1991 Alfa Romeo presented the 164 V6 Turbo. This was powered by a two-liter variant of the "Arese V6" which, when charged with a turbocharger , had an output of 150 kW (204 hp).

Facelift

Alfa Romeo 164 Super (1992-1997)

In autumn 1992 the Alfa Romeo 164 underwent a major overhaul and was called the 164 Super from then on .

These models can be recognized by their new ellipsoid headlights and more voluminous bumpers. The interior has also been significantly modified, particularly recognizable from the newly designed center console. The body was given reinforced impact protection and a driver airbag was available for the first time (in Europe). With the 164 Super , the 4-valve version of the "Arese V6" was introduced, the V6 24V with 3 liter displacement and 155 kW (211 hp). This model was also available with a 4-speed automatic from ZF .

A more powerful version with 170 kW (232 PS) now powered the Alfa 164 Quadrifoglio Verde (QV) 24V as a top model, which, however, had to give way to the all-wheel drive Alfa 164 Q4 at the beginning of 1994 . In addition to a permanent all-wheel drive , the new top model also had a 6-speed transmission from Getrag . However, the two Quadrifoglio models still retained the bumpers of the original model.

These were also shown by the simple 164s, which were still offered alongside the Super until the beginning of 1994 , which otherwise were technically identical to the Super. Only gradually did Alfa offer the Twin Spark (2.0), V6 (3.0 12V), TD (2.5), V6 TURBO (2.0) versions as Super.

The 164 then received only minor changes. From 1994 a passenger airbag was available. From model year 1995 the petrol engines met the Euro 2 emissions standard . In the last Super models from 1996, the sports seats previously reserved for Quadrifoglio models and a wooden steering wheel and gear knob were installed as standard; In addition, the bumpers were decorated with a bronzed strip instead of the chrome trim.

Production of the Alfa 164 ended in mid-1997. A total of a little more than 273,000 units were produced, which for the period from the start of production in September 1987 until it was discontinued on June 27, 1997 was divided between the models as follows:

  • 2.0 and 2.0 super: 158.057
  • 3.0 V6, 3.0 V6 Super and 3.0 4x4: 69,748
    • of which 3.0 V6 24V QV: 998 pieces
    • of which 3.0 V6 24V Q4: 1206 pieces (130 alfar red, 210 white, 601 black, 195 proteo red, 642 dark gray, 644 medium gray)
  • 2.5 turbodiesel and 2.5 super turbodiesel: 45,602

In autumn 1998 the successor Alfa 166 made its debut .
