Amphoe Pak Chong ( Thai อำเภอ ปากช่อง ) is a district ( Amphoe - administrative district) in the west of the Nakhon Ratchasima province . The province of Nakhon Ratchasima is located in the northeast region of Thailand , the so-called Isan .

geography

Pak Chong County is the "gateway" to northeast Thailand (Isan). Both one of the main highways in Thailand, the Thanon Mittraphap ("Road of Friendship"; National Road 2), as well as the northeast line of the Thai Railway (SRT) cross the Phetchabun Mountains in this district.

With 1825 km² Pak Chong is the largest district in the province of Nakhon Ratchasima and with 192,000 the second largest population after the capital district Amphoe Mueang Nakhon Ratchasima .

Adjacent areas (from north clockwise): Amphoe Sikhio and Wang Nam Khiao Nakhon Ratchasima province, Amphoe Mueang Nakhon Nayok the province of Nakhon Nayok , Amphoe Prachantakham the province of Prachin Buri and Amphoe Muak Lek of Saraburi province .

The first national park in Thailand, the Khao-Yai National Park, is partly located in Pak Chong County. It is the headwaters of the Mae Nam Takhong (Takhong River) , a tributary of the Mae Nam Mun (Mun River) . The takhong is the main water resource of the city of Nakhon Ratchasima . It is dammed by the Lam-Takhong Dam in the north of Amphoe Pak Chong.

history

The area of ​​today's district was in the past part of the Tambon Khanong Phra in the district of Chan Thuek (today's Amphoe Sikhio ). When during the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) the northeastern railway line (see: Thai State Railroad ) was built through the area, the mountains Nok Yung and Noi were blown up to create a passage (Thai: Chong - also: "Canal") allow for the railroad. Therefore, the residents called their nearby village Pak Chong, which means "mouth of the canal".

In 1949, Ban Pak Chong was expanded to become Tambon Pak Chong. In 1956 it was upgraded to a "branch circle" ( King Amphoe ) , at that time consisting of the Tambon Pak Chong, Chanthuek, Klong Dan and Mu Si. Finally Pak Chong got full amphoe status in July 1958.

  • Pak Chong (Thai: เทศบาล เมือง ปากช่อง ) consists of parts of the Tambon Pak Chong and Nong Sarai.

There are four municipalities with "small town" status ( Thesaban Tambon ) in the district:

  • Klang Dong (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล กลาง ดง ) consists of parts of the Tambon Klang Dong and Phaya Yen.
  • Wang Sai (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล วัง ไทร ) consists of the entire tambon Wang Sai.
  • Mu Si (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล หมูสี ) consists of the entire Tambon Mu Si.
  • Sima Mongkhon (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล สี มา มงคล ) also consists of parts of the Tambon Klang Dong.
